Q: My Doctor Says All Women Ovulate 14 Days Before Their Period

I only have a 26 day cycle and am ovulating on day 16. Is this ok? I have only just found out by using an ovulation kit. Are these kits reliable? If they are then I have been trying to get pregnant to early in my cycle and this info may help some others realise the importance of detecting their exact time of ovulation. Is the 14 day a popular misconception? Does anyone else ovulate at a different time to this?

Many thanks

I am under the impression that generally, most woman ovulate on day 14. However, it's normal for women to ovulate at different times. And day 16 isn't too off. And like me, you have a shorter cycle. So you're bound to ovulate on a different day.

What i've learned is to take the first day of your shortest cycle, and start using the ovulation kits 10 days after that. It might take you a couple of cycles to figure out what day you average on.

Good luck!

What your doctor said is true. To reword it...Your af comes 14 days after you ovulate. That seldom varies in a woman with no hormonal problems.

The first section of the cycle is what really varies between women...So yes, what your dr told is true :)

Does That Have Serious Implications Then?
If its true tht all women ovulate 14 days before their next period and I am in fact, ovulating 10 days before mine, does that mean I have fertility problems as your reply seems to indicate this.

I doubt that you are. 14 days is the "text book" person. How many of us are text books? Are your cycles regular?

How long have you been trying to conceive for?

Ovulation
I am as regular as clock work every 26 days. I have only been trying to conceive for 10 months which, I know is a lot less than some people on here and I truly feel for them because it is the not knowing that is the most worrying. At least when you know, you can start doing something about it.
Actually I got the day 16 wrong because that is when the ovulation kit is saying I am about to ovulate so it's probably more like day 17 in a 26 day cycle. Thank you for your replies, it is very nice of you all.
