Q: Anxiety Over Diagnosis

About 3 weeks ago I started having chest pains and some pain in shoulder near clavicle. Made appt. With doc and he scheduled stress echo test. A couple of days later the same pain sent me to the er and the stress echo was performed earlier than scheduled. Ekg also normal. When they got me off treadmill after reaching target heart rate, my heart rate dropped so quickly that they did not get conclusive results from the echo, (i keep in pretty good shape with weight lifting, cycling, and walking). The same day, they ran a adenosine-cardiolite stress with mulitiple images of my heart. This test show good perfusion and blood flow and no heart problems. Er doc did say he would have liked to see my ejection fraction higher (it was 48). They sent me home and over the next few days I continued to have the same pains. The pain doesn't seem to come at any particular time, but does seem to be anxiety related, and my anxiety levels have been quite high and i've been a bit compulsive about any pain I do feel. About a week ago, the pain came again and was with me off and on for 10-15 minutes, so I went back to the er. Again normal ekg. Blood pressure when I arrived about 160/100, by the time I left it was 116/68. They did a ct scan looking for any aortic abnormalities and found nothing. Saw my doc (not cardiologist) a few days ago and he concludes there is nothing wrong with my heart. I asked about coronary artery spasm and he said that would have shown up during the cardiolite imaging. I am still feeling anxiety over the pain, it comes and goes throughout the day. Doc feels it is musculo-skeletel due to the fact that I also was lifting last weekend and felt the pain during exertion, but not when resting. In the last day or two, I have felt it during rest. I should add that I have had borderline hypertension for years (i'm now 44) and only a week ago started taking lisinopril (this was after pains started). Any opinions or suggestions about my story would be appreciated.

I suggest you stop lifting weights and do walking instead.

Anxiety plays a major role in your heart rate. Adrenaline that is dumped into your system raises your blood pressure. Arteries that run through your neck and under your collarbone will feel the impact. Weight lifting causes a higher heart rate. Since you have gone to the doctor and nothing has been seen that can clarify your symptoms, I suggest maybe some kava-kava (herb used to help people relax, can be found at local heath store) or maybe if it is bad enough some benzodiazapines like xanax, valium or klonopin. Only take these medicines when you feel the pressure and see if it works. If not, try going back to your doctor.
