My grnanson has been in arnold palmer childrens hospital for 4 days. He was finally diagnosed with epilipsy. He is having numeroys seizures daily and medication is not seeming to help .They say they will wait until the week-end to see if there are any improvements and if not, they say the will put him into a coma for 7 to 10 days to prevent further brain damage. His seizures are hard to recognize, he loses focus and goes into a blank stare and his body becomes motionless.
I would like to hear from others that have had this type of treatment

What Kind of Sizures?
Hi, are they gran mals Question is your grandson with a neurologist Question have you had a 2nd opioion Question i'm sure you are checking all your options. I have never heard of putting someone into coma to stop more brain damage.
I was 39 when I was diagnosed with epy and tried so many different drugs. Went to 5 neuros and ended up at u.C.Davis. 4 years later I had brain surgery june of 2002. I'm about 70% better. They told me my chances would be 40 to 60% I would not have anymore sizures. The other side I would have them. So now i'm on keppra as of 6 weeks ago with topamax. Ihave been on top for about 4 years. No sizures so far. I'm back to work at my same job after 2 years off. Only part-time. They want me to wait the 6 months till I can start driving. So let me know how you g-son is doing. Jamie

Hi, I am new to this board, and to epilepsy!

I am not sure what kind of seizure your grandson is having, but it sounds to me like absence seizures. My daughter has the same symptoms!
She was diagnosed just this past oct.

Is your grandsons seizures a result of fever? ( febrile)?

I to have never heard of doctors putting into coma! If his seizures are absence seizures, there is little fact that it will cause brain damage!
Have they done a eeg since he has been in hospital? This will show if there is brain damage! It can also show if there is a history of seizures!

Please keep us posted as to how he is doing!

Best wishes... Pj

Eeg, M.r.i.
I have had both of these several times in the past 6 years. And also sleep depervation for 3 days, hooked up to a monitor and vidieo. They did alot of testing for 6 months before I had my brain sugery. So they first have to know where they are coming from. Mine were coming from my right frontal lobe. They think due from maybe a blow from the head in 1977 from a car accident, spinal menitigtis when I was 6 months old, or a bad case of measles when I was 6 years old. They can't pin point it. But I started noticing after the accident I was having the petit mals once in awhile for the first 10 years. Then they kept coming on more and more the last 10 years and boom it hit the 1st gran mal when I left my marriage (bad). In 98. So just try to find out any infor about your g-son health history. Take care jamie
