Post-op. Cervical Pain
Posted: 10-13-05 14:38pm

My injury is the result of an auto accident. I fractured the facet of my c-6 vertebra causing it to "slip" forward on the c-7. After 12 weeks in a hard collar the pain was still there, shocking pains in rt. Bicep, neck pain, numbness and tingling of rt. Thumb and index finger and now an increasing pain starting in my left bicep along with arm weakness. After getting a second opinion and second cat scans a bone chip was found. I had an anterior discectomy with fusion and plating along with a posterior surgery to remove the bone chip with hardware installed. It is now 3 weeks later, my arms seem to be stronger but most of the pains and numbness are still there along with the new pains of the surgery. Can these pains be caused by the swelling of soft tissue around the spine? I would greatly appreciate anything you can tell me about this.

Steevo ~

yes, the pain and numbness could still be from swelling. The other things to remember is that nerves heal at a rate of 1 inch a month so it will take time. Another thing is you had an auto accident which caused your pain so with this you have injured every thing in that area of your neck like muscle and ligaments as well. Some might be permanent damage depending on what kind of injury the nerve received from the accident. Three weeks is still very very early. You may need more healing time.

Wishing you the best.
