I stumbled upon this site after doing alot
of research so i'm hoping someone has
maybe experienced what we are going
through.
About 2 weeks ago, I picked my then almost
8 mo old son up from his carseat as he was
waking up from his nap. He started
shaking. His head was bobbing back and
forth like someone with parkinsons
disease. I put my hand on the back of
his head and he calmed within seconds.
It lasted all of 30 seconds if that. I
was freaked out and concerned but decided
to watch to see if anything like this
happened again since nothing like this had
ever happened before.
Yesterday morning my son (now 8 mos) was
napping in his bouncer. He woke up and I
went in to get him...He'd been up about
5-10 minutes by the time I got to him.
He was playing with his toys and seemed
very awake and happy. I took him to his
room to change his clothes. I opened up
his closet door and again his head started
shaking. He doesn't lose consciousness,
his eyes don't roll back in his head, he
doesn't seem stiff after, and he's not
foaming at the mouth or sticking out his
tongue or anything of that nature. I
immediately called the ped's office who
got him right in. I told them about the
two episodes I had witnessed. He checked
his reflexes and asked me about
developmentally where my son was at with
different things. My son has always been
ahead developmentally. He crawled at 4
mos, he sits up on his own, he pulls
himself up, and has even tried to walk
with a laundry basket in front of him.
Our ped is very encouraged by his
development and stated outwardly he
appears to be a healthy, happy, responsive
little guy. He did suggest that we get
an eeg done on his brain to see if
anything is actually going on as what i'm
describing is apparently not a typical
seizure. Our eeg is tuesday...My son has
to be sleep deprived for 4 hours before he
gets the test.
I guess i'm beside myself as he appears to
act and develop normally. Everything
i've read on infant seizures or spasms has
a poor prognosis and what my son is
experiencing isn't necessarily inline with
the descriptions of the episodes. I'm
wondering if any other parents have
experienced this with their infant or if
anyone knows anything about infants having
epilepsy? Is it always a poor prognosis?
Thanks in advance for any stories or
advice you can give.

Hi how are you.Sorry to hear about your
son. I love children and it breaks my
heart when there is something wrong with
them.I have epiilesy.Your son could be
shaking because if he may hit his head
fall or anything to do with the brain can
cause seizures.Even when you were pregant
with him if his head get smuch it can
cause seizures.I know someone never had a
seizure intill she got pregant. They did a
eeg on her and saw when she was born her
part of her head was smuch.Well hope
everything goes good.Let me know what
happens with your son.

Thanks for your reply.
My son had his eeg done and his test
results came back normal. At this time
with no regression in his development and
no other episodes since, the drs have
decided to take a wait and see approach.
If he has anymore episodes we will do
further testing like a ct scan and mri but
at this point the drs see no reason that
he should be medicated and put through
anymore testing with no more shaking and
still developing ahead of schedule :)

I hope that your son keeps doing well with
no more episodes!! It is good to keep an
eye on him and report if you see anything
else happening. You did right to have the
eeg even though the pede did not think it
sounded like seizures.
Some seizures in infancy are not as scary
as the infantile spasms. There are many
types of seizures.
I hope that he keeps doing well. Did you
see a pede neuro for the eeg?

We had the eeg done at one of the best ped
neurology hospitals in the country (thank
god we live 45 minutes away from it :d ).
The neurologist then looks over the test
and makes the determination. Our regular
ped is linked to this hospital so our ped
and the ped neurologist conferred and
decided no other treatment would be
necessary at this time.
Thank you for your response. He hasn't
had any more episodes since (knock on
wood) so i'm hoping it was just a passing
thing. I'm still observing him like
crazy to make sure we aren't seeing
anything else though. I feel like a
paranoid nut now :d
thanks again!
