For months I have been plagued with a strange collection of rather like red / pale pink bruises on my stomach area, waist, etc.... If I scratch them they bleed. They are not spots, and are flat, but they are really ugly to look at.

I am overweight have been all my life but I don't know what is causing this.

They appear, dissppear and re-appear on other parts of my stomach / waist area. Some are large, some are tiny, but I am clueless as to what is causing them.

I take no medication, and have not changed anything so don't think it is an allergy?

Sorry, but you need to give us a better description. Do they look oval-shaped? Hypo-pigmented? Hyper-pigmented? Itching? Nausea?

I know that I have pityarsis rosea (red-dark, glossy bumps on my trunk, abdomen, upper arms, lower back and neck following the skin lines accompanied with a large herald patch). Does your description sound like something that I have? It will take 6-8 weeks (up to 12 weeks for total clearance!) for it to completely go away. My skin will not be normal-looking until late november and much of december.
