This has been happening off and on for a while now. Recently I had a really bad sore throat and I felt the "blob-ule" on the back of the throat right before I had the pain. Now, it's went away but I still feel the "blob-ule" and my throat still feels a little ache-y. It's nice to see that I'm not the only one that's had to deal with this. I didn't know how else to explain it other than a little piece of vomit that's somehow lodged in there or something...because sometimes it can smell as bad as that. The question I have is this. How do you know if it's happening because of a "tonsilitis" condition. If you have "tonsilitis" do you ALWAYS have to have your tonsils removed? What's the process and procedures? Is it expensive? Will I be down and out from work for a while? Thanks!

Tonsillolith
I've gotten more of these lumps as an adult. I've found Wikipedia to be quite informative on this subject under "Tonsillolith" with a photo as well. I too am trying to figure out how to get rid of it. My two other sisters get this as well. I have post nasal drip and seen on a previous post that this can contribute to the lumps. I'll be looking for alternative medicine to fix this problem. I wonder if our polluted and toxic environments contributes to these problems. My mother and father have never had these issues and they grew up in a far less polluted environment (the country side). My siblings and myself have grown up in the inner city. I wish everyone one luck on this.

Itchy Throat, Allegies, White Particles On My Left Tonsil.
I've had these things on and off forever and I can't say I remember having an itchy throat or cold when I have them, but I do have allergies and asthma on and off with the postnasal drip. I found out my Dad has them as well and my daughters as well who are young adults now. We all have allergies, my Dad with the least allergies.

Besides the q-tip pushing, which I haven't used in 3-4 years, you can use a gargle of a couple of drops of tea tree oil. I drop the drops directly into my mouth and then get enough warm water to gargle as long as you can. You will have to follow up with clean water to swoosh in your mouth, since it isn't very pleasant flavor, but try to leave the stronger solution in back of throat. This seems to dry these things up faster and they will come out sooner.

My nephew has these now, which made me want to look them up again.
Tea Tree Oil, Tuesday's Plantation brand works for us.

I get them too!!

I have an injection needle thing (without the needle) that has a curled end on it. I cut the tip off. I use this to spray warm water in my 'pockets' in the back of my mouth to spray out the food particles.

When my breathe starts tasting/smelling bad - I know its time to rinse out my pockets!!

Itchy throat white deposits on tonsils
I get white deposits behind my right tonsil. I had a sore throat and when I looked in my mouth I found a large lump of something that appeared to be puss pocket (gross) behind my tonsil. I went to the doctor, He told me that it was actually a calcium deposit. He said all people get them, people don't really look until they have a sore throat. He said they break off, fall off we usually swallow them and don't even realize it. Usually when we are sleeping or eating. Sometimes they work their way up and you spit them out.
With all of the colds etc going around, again today I notices something back there. When I looked there was another one. If you can handle the gag reflex you can scrape them off. Interesting but gross, aparently they can get quite large the doctor said the one he looked at was the size of the end of the pen he was writing with as an example.

I use to get strep throat all the time as a kid and then in college i had tonsillitis 3 times in a year and a half. Doctors refused to take my tonsils out because "i needed them" and now i have these annoying tonsil stones. Do my tonsils really "work" anymore if they're really swollen all the time and filled with these stones? Not to mention i still get tonsilitis at least once a year

Tonsilolliths
These things have been the bane of my life and my breath since I was mid teens - the tonsils have four parts Pharayngeal (adenoids in nose)Palantine (what you can see back of mouth), tubal (down throat) and lingual (back of tongue)- the latter three have crypts which get bigger as you get older. Bacteria gets trapped and multiplies in the crypts causing the white lumps. Even when you get palantines out you can still get bacteria down in the lingual crypt and tubal crypt which can't be removed. I'm trying Grossnans Hydro-pulse to jet water through the nose and throat - will let you know how it works.

reduce tonsil stones
i've found that my tonsil stones only occur when i eat dairy. an ENT doctor once told me to cut out dairy, chocolate & tomato based products from my diet. since i love all three, i started to remove them one by one to see which one had a positive impact. i can go days/weeks without tonsil stones, but the day after i eat dairy, i have them.

dairy dairy dairy
I've been dealing with these things and the bad breath that they bring for too long! It seems that all this time i've just been reacting to dairy... I was also feeling really lethargic and my skin was really dry. Not eating dairy has changed all of this and I'm no-longer afraid to breath within a meter of someone! Your tonsils are just a warning bell... don't cut them off, fix the real problem! Good luck!

some kind of tonsil or throat ailments
Although I'm no Doctor, a lot of this sounds like candida yeast overgrowth might be the underlying cause. Especially if it is reoccuirring over periods of time, occuirs after taking antibiotics and other oral thrush conditions exist such and white phlem on the tongue or soft palate of mouth and throat. If so, there are different treaments availiable to you. Most traditional M.D. are not up to date on the candida so they treat it with some form of antibiotic, but this only helps temporarilly and ussually symptoms reappear shortly after. The candida is not a virus or a bateria but rather a yeast and when it is out of control,it becomes pathogenic, meaning it produces toxins in the body. Our immune system tries to keep the yeast in check but when the overgrowth occuirrs many symptoms flare up and become more visiable and really annoying. The candida yeast is ussually present in the muocuous membrane regions of our bodies such as the mouth&throat, and genital tracts. In women it also produces vaginitis and creates a discharge which looks a lot like regular cottoge cheese. In some people it produces sinus allargies and strehp throat symtoms. Some remedies are prescrition drugs {Nystatin, Mycostatin, floucozonol, etc.)or naturopathy treaments that include yougurts, oxygenation, probiotics, whole foods diets, and extra virgin coconut oil, etc. Theres all kinds of info on the net about treaments and cures so be very diligent in your research and dont purchase the first pop-up on candida cures that comes allong. I suggest you get a second opinion from another medical expert on the subject. Good luck and best wishes for a healthier future.

TONSOLITHS FIX
PLEASE READ THIS! IT WILL SAVE YOU A LOT OF GRIEF!

I just fixed my tonsil stone problem!

I'm not into alternative remedies, but after using a combination of amoxicillin and flonase to no avail, I decided to take matters into my own hands:

I went to the pharmacy and picked up a small plastic syringe (without a needle-- DO NOT USE A NEEDLE!), which Walgreens actually gave to me for free, as they don't sell them.

I filled the syringe with a mild saline solution made from nasal irrigation salts in water.

I put the syringe into the pockets in the back of my throat and fired! Presto! A heap of tonsoliths, hidden way down in the recess, came popping out. I immediately repeated this a few times until the tonsoliths stopped appearing. It's been a week, and I've re-irrigated a few times, just to make sure, but I think I've cured myself! Nothing has popped out since that first cathartic rinse. And my bad breath is gone.

The bacteria that causes the tonsoliths sits in the recesses in the tonsils, so it's really hard to remove all our tonsoliths.

When I decided to irrigate my tonsils, I thought that I had succeeded in removing all my tonsoliths through pressure and prodding with a Q-tip-- I thought that the irrigation would just kill the bacteria and prevent the formation of any others. I had no idea that the cavities in the tonsil run so deep. No wonder clearing a few tonsoliths manually had achieved little in the way of curing my bad breath!

So, my advice is to irrigate, and not to poke around with your tonsils using your fingers or anything else. A neat jet of water, and you're done!

PS. I've also tried irrigating with Listerine, in an attempt to make sure I've killed the bacteria. Not sure which is better, but I'd start with saline as it's milder.

I too have a chronic problem with my tonsils.I'm an older adult and right now I'm suffering with a R-tonsil which is sore & enlarged.I saw a ENT Dr and he was basically useless. For me it starts with....a sinus infection or cold, goes into my throat causing a sore throat. Then it goes into the tonsils.I can have this for as long as 4 to 6 mos at a time.I'm so tired of it!!!!! I could scream!!
I will get this pus taste in my mouth, the Dr's could care less.I'm thinking about getting some tea tree oil.I've done the salt water gargle but, still hurts.Any ideas would be helpful. Sad

I HAVE THE ANSWER!!!!! Tonsil stones
Hi guys

The Blobs you speak about are called tonsil stones. There is only 1 way to stop them and that is to remove the tonsils. I have the same problem but think it is caused by my dust mite allergy.

You can google tonsil stones and watch videos on youtube.

I've been seeing a ENT Dr and he said they rarely remove tonsils anymore. They have to be VERY,VERY infected for them to be removed. He said as we get older they generally shrink up.I still have problems with the one on the R-side of my throat...I see him in 2 wks, so we'll see.

My Home Remedy for Tonsiliths/Tonsil Stones
I have had tonsiliths/tonsil stones since I was at least 12. I am now 43. At a very young age I continued to suffer from acute tonsilitis (ages 4-Cool and I always had enlarged tonsils and adenoids. As a child, my pediatrician recommended removing my tonsils but my parents refused.

I was 43 when I had my first case of strep throat.

To remove the tonsil stones I recommend purchasing a pack of long, large hair pins (NOT bobby pins). You need the length to hold them between your fingers as you work them between the outer skin flap that leads up to the palate and the actual tonsil.

Make sure the hair pin is clean and dip the rounded end in a small cup of Listerine (regular) beforehand - don't dry the pin, the Listerine helps kill the odor and acts as an antiseptic. Gently ease hair pin between the flap of palate skin and the tonsil until you hit a point of resistance. If you find the hair pin is too wide to fit take you finger or teeth and firmly bite the round end to adjust the size.

When you ease the hair pin in, DO NOT push beyond that point of resistance as you may tear the tonsil. Do not twist the hair pin around either...just gently use a back and forth sort of scooping motion to pull the stone out. Some people are more tender than other - some may be able to stand a bit more tugging and prying but it is best to start slowly.

Because the mucous in your mouth is so slippery, as you remove the hair pin some stones may retract back onto the our part of your tonsil, tongue or roof of your mouth in your salive. Or if there are many some will fall off the pin as you take it out of your mouth. Just rinse and spit. Clean and dip the pin and repeat until no stones appear.

If find that the more I snore the more frequently I need to clear the tonsiliths. Additionally, I see more production in Winter and Spring.

Sometimes I use the thin shorter hair pins or large bobby pins but until you are coordinated with hair pin use, I would not risk it. I have been doing this since I was a teenager. Good luck!
