Is It All That Bad

I am due to have my gb out on monday the 10th, doc says 2 to 3 day recover time. From what I read its not. Who is right and who is wrong. He says like 99% of people are just fine. Reading some of these posts are freaking me out. Give me some insight to all this please

For me it was more like 3/4 weeks before I was really back on my feet. And six months later i'm still adjusting to living without a gallbladder. But everyone recovers at a diffrent rate.

Hope everything goes well for you.

Hi,
first of all I would like to you all the best for your surgery. Now lets come to the point. Basically the recovery time depends upon which method of surgery has been used. Cholecystectomy or the removal of gb is done via 2 methods... 1 is by laproscopy in which the surgery is performed by small ports made in the abdominal wall... This is the minimally invasive surgery and we in our clinical practice keep the patient admitted for about 24hrs post-op after which he is perfect enough to go home. The 2nd approach is open approach by conventional surgical techniques... It takes 2-3 days for the patient to go home but wound care needs to be done till the wound heals. The major part after the healing of wound is modifying of the lifestyle.... Especially regarding the diet which includes reducing the fatty (oil rich) foods. So dont worry, no matter what operative option your doctor selects, cholecystectomy is no big deal and just remember "he knows what he is doing" :)
stay happy...

Regards,
doctor

Geesh I wish I could have stayed in the hospital for 24 hours!! I was in and out in about 4-5 hours and still feeling the effects of the anesthesia. I had to be wheeled out in a wheelchair because I was too groggy and spaced to walk!
The recovery to me wasn't all that bad. The nausea I experienced the first couple of days was the worst. The co2 they use to inflate your abdomen with was a close second--it causes shoulder/abdomen pain and took about 2 weeks to fully leave my system. And trying to sit up/walk/do anything using abdomen muscles the first few days was the third worst. Other than that everything went good. I was able to walk around (slowly) about a week after surgery.
Don't rush the fatty foods or you'll end up with nausea, cramps and diahrrea. I made that mistake and paid for it.

Good luck and hope all goes well!

Real Time - About 3 Weeks
Posted: 10-04-05 11:08am

I had my gb out by laparascopic surgery on 9/9. It took a solid 3 weeks for me to be back to pre-surgery condition. The first week is rough. The gas caused me alot of discomfort and vomiting and I had severe pain the first week along with a low grade fever. It's now 3 weeks past and I am able to get around and do everything I want to do. All that's left is some residual tiredness.

Good luck with your surgery.
