Q: My Friend Is Addicted to Marijuana - Help!

How can I help my friend who is addicted to weed? He's been on it for two years and smokes 4-5 blunts a day. He wants to quit very badly, but he's tried before for 3 months and it didn't last, got back into the habit, and he says it's especially hard for him. Doesn't have a lot of money for counseling - what can he do? And is there anything I can do to help him?

Marijuana addiction is often a mis-understood addiction. It is however, a serious addiction and a hard one to overcome. I will suggest a few things that you might try. One, get him to talk seriously, to everyone he smokes weed with. He wants to tell them that he is serious about quitting weed, and he wants them to help him. Second, he wants to seriously talk with his dealers, perhaps he wants to bring a friend along. He wants to tell the dealers that he is totally serious about quitting, and does not want them to sell him weed any more. Now that he has made it difficult for him to buy weed, or find someone to smoke it with him, he should find something to keep him occupied, like a hobby. Your support will be the biggest difference, keeping him positive and motivated and making him realize all the benefits to remaining weed free will inevitably will enable him to quit.

Hope this helps!

Good to see a friend genuinely worrying about the other. Well, addiction to marijuana is the most common types of addiction now days. As Relyt said it’s hard to get rid of this addiction. And the things he mentioned it’s good. You can tell your friend to do that. One thing I would like to say is just be by your friend’s side to give him the support. If still your friend cannot get out of this then take him to some of the AA meetings or to some rehab programs. I can give you detailed information about these programs, just let me know once. Best of luck friend.

unfortunately it's his decision to make. you can keep at him though and make him realise that what he is doing is effecting him in a bad way. Theres a really good post in this forum called DRUG ADDICTION. Have a read. It may help you to help him. It suggests that drug users can find it difficult to quit alone. They may need medication or cognitive therapy in order to help them reach they're goal.

Good luck : )

Misunderstood
What people dont realize is that there are two types of addictions, physical and mental. Cannabis produces only a mental addiction. In contrast, video games also can produce a mental addiction. Cannabis is probably the easiest thing to quit if one really wanted too, but they must want to.

"Well, addiction to marijuana is the most common types of addiction now days" Erroneous on all accounts.

Back to main topic though, Relyt has some good ideas. It's important that your friend does talk to all his friends who smoke. This is probably THE most important because your friend still smokes probably because he sees his friends doin it and can immediately regain the 'why not' mentality for smoking. If the friends don't wanna help in his quitting, he needs to detachment himself from that group.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT NOTE- DO NOT TALK TO THE DEALER ABOUT QUITTING. Simply stop contacting him. You do not want to get in between a drug dealer and his business. I'm not saying bad stuff's gonna happen or even that he'll understand. What I'm saying is that it's unknown so it's best just to cut contact from the dealer. He probably will just continue on doing his thing for other people anyways.

Finding a hobby is good too, basically anything that will SUCCESSFULLY fill in the spot where MJ once was will do.

In the end, it's all up to your friend whether he will quit it or not. Just like someone mentioned above MJ is addicting just like video games are to some people. It's all psychological. Your friend needs to realize what he's doing isn't what he wants to do and is detrimental to what he really wants to pursue. It's gonna be how he perceives smoking. Because for example, I smoke more than your friend, but I don't find it affecting anything I'm trying to pursue in my social/academic endeavors.
