I just had my HSG performed this morning and after reading tons of these posts, I prepared myself for the absolute worst. My procedure was done at an outpatient Radiology office. A female PA performed the procedure and for me, the most painful part of the exam was having the speculum inserted and cranked open. The rest was not painful at all, though uncomfortable.

When I was finished with the exam, I was expecting more dye to come out of my nether regions, but not too much came out. They did prescribe a round of antibiotics as a preventative measure so that I don't develop any infections. I have had very very mild cramps, a little discomfort and very little spotting. I had partial blockage (though it was unclogged due to this procedure) of one side and discovered I have a "tilted" uterus. While she can only tell me the preliminary information about the exam, the actual radiologist will review it and write up a report that I can pick up at a later date. Overall, the experience was not as bad as I thought it would be. It's was very similar to a Gynecological exam. As always, they're uncomfortable no matter what, but I suppose the pain is different with each person and it also depends on who performs the exam. Luckily for me, it was a really nice person who walked and talked me through it.

Well, I had it yesterday and YIKES! From reading these I see that everybody is different so I guess there is no way to tell until you do it but mine was BAD.
Have somebody go with you.
I wanted to punch the doctor. He was teaching an intern so while I was dying it was taking longer because he was walking her through it. I knew it would hurt so I was ready for that but I was not ready for pain from beginning to end. When it started tears just started streaming ( and I'm not a baby- I've had 3rd degree burns before and could take it) .
Then the dye went in and it hurt so bad I passed out. When I came to I started throwing up and threw up 4 more times. Not pretty. I'm not allergic to shell fish or anything , it just was such a shock to my system that everything went wacky.
They had to call in help because my pulse dropped so low. I'm o.k. now and I'm at home but I'm still sick. I have a terrible headache and fever and just feel pukey!
I'm still bleeding and cramping.
One tube was blocked but one is open so I'm just praying for a baby this month!!!
I'm so glad for the ladies that had an easy time with this . You are lucky!

Hello all,
I had an HSG procedure done this Tuesday 11/17/09 and there was pain involved. I would say I experienced the most pain when the doctor had to clamp on to my cervix to insert the plug to avoid the dye from leaking out when he inserted the dye. The insertion of the dye caused mild discomfort and cramping. On a scale of 1-10 with 1 being no pain and 10 being pass out pain I would say the overall level was around a 6-7.

All was well with my uterus and tubes and I am glad I had the procedure done but even happier it's behind me now. I did take the ibuprophin before and after the procedure. I had spotting that day and slight spotting the last couple days but cramping has ceased.

Good luck to you all and be sure to breathe during the exam, in fact even ask one of the nurses or X-ray techs to hold your hand, don't be embarassed to ask, the hand holding really helped me feel better.

Good luck to you all

I had hysterosalpingogram last week and I am awaiting for the reports. I had fear and inhibitions about the test; but it wasn't that bad. I had taken Advil an hour ago. Of course, it was a little awkward to have a catheter entering my body . I think I gave a hard time to the doctor who was trying to put the tube as I was pushing myself backward. But he did it so efficiently that the tube could find the uterus opening in one go. I had a pricking sensation inside for a second. When he infused the dye, I felt a mild cramp similar to menstrual cramp. Then the doc told me to turn to left side and that’s it ! It did not take more than 5 minutes. He said , everything is fine and all done. I not at all bleed.I didn’t had any pain later.
The doc kept on saying the labor is multiple times painful than this & u have to be strong if u wanna be a mom!
