I am 28 years old and I am very active in many different forms of excercise. Mainly I use kettlebells (dragondoor.Com) and do yoga (both yin and vinyasa). I consider myself to be rather flexible, especially in the hips.

I have had back pain growing up from when I was a teenager. It has progressively gotten worse. What happens is that something triggers a soreness in my lower back which may or may not progress into an intense pain whereby I get sharp pains in my butt and down my leg. Even yoga can trigger this. It is painful to walk, stand up or even get in and out of bed. This usually subsides in a few days and I can begin training again.

There is definitely a part of lower back which has pronounced flexibility problems. It is almost as if it were stuck. Yoga and kettlebells have helped with the amount of times it becomes painful but it still hasn't stopped it altogether.

My doctor gave me somas and prescription strength ibuprofen but they do absolutely nothing. I still can't sleep at night when it is like that because I tend to toss around before I fall asleep. It is like a ritual before I fall into deep sleep. :)

anyway, I wanted to ask all of your advice about what I should do. What kind of medications are out there that will help with the pain? Should I keep going to my regular doctor and tell him the meds are not working or should I see a specialist? My father has had 2 back surgeries and it is my goal to never go under the knife but rather keep my back as healthy as possible.

Much respect...
