Q: Can Stress And Anxiety Cause Muscles Pains And Swelling

My son has been through hell and back the last three years, with this year losing his job amongst a horrible divorce.

After losing his job, he has been experiencing severe back pain, muscle aches all over his body right down to his feet. Now his toes are actually started to swell.

He has no medical insurance anymore and wont go and seek out state aid for his medical conditions. There isnt anything my husband and I can do as far as paying for his health care as we cannot afford it. We cannot get him on our medical insurance because he is an adult and on his own.

He is also depressed and has anxiety attacks,, but is not on any medication anymore due to the fact he cannot afford it.

I just wondered if anyone else has experience muscle aches and pains due to stress and anxiety.

Have any insight? I would appreciated it.

Thanks in advance,

bet

Hi bet,

i have experienced many aches and pains due to anxiety and stress. It`s basically your body is preparing for the flight or fight response and all the blood diverts to the muscles to try to strengthen them. Your body is preparing to run or fight, I found that after a panic attack had happened all this energy was built up in my body which led to me shaking. All my muscles, especially my arms and legs would ache so badly I felt I had ran a marathon!

As for the swelling I have never experienced this but I think he should see a doctor somehow. However he may not necessarily need to go on medication for the anxiety. The best tools are to learn coping skills which are better than any medicine.

I hope it all gets better for you all

I find that when I have been having anxiety and stress, I get muscle aches.
Any excercise that I doo like walking accross town will result in pains in my legs, more so than when i'm not so stressed.
I went travelling and did a lot of walking when I was having daily panic. My one calf muscle was tight and painful and swollen to almost twice the size.
This went away.
Calcium and magnisium really helps the muscle tension. A supplement might be helpful for him!
