Pap Smears
Posted: 09-14-05 19:58pm

Hi all this will be my 2nd child. My children will be 12 years apert and I hate to have pap smears done. I fear that I will miscarry. I dont think these pap smears should be done in the first trimester. I realize that they are important but I think doctors should wait. Lets face it after you get one you end up cramping and bleeding. My aunt actually miscarried after she had a pap test done. Whats everyones thoughts on this?

It is a necessary procedure that needs to be done. Doctors want to make sure everything is functioning correctly. As far as it leading to a miscarriage, I for one have never heard of that happening before. If that was the case, doctors would find other means for procedures.

Pap smers shouldn't cause you to miscarry but if the try to do a biopsy tell them no!!! Really though its seams scary and unsafe but if you talk to the doctor about your concerns maybe it will help you understan better. I was really worried cause I have had cervix cancer and had a large protion of my cervix removed but nothing happened after the pap. Everyone is different though. But discuss it with you doctor and if your still worried express your concern and what risks are there if you don't have one....

I had mine done at my first doc appointment when I was 6 weeks and I never had any cramping or bleeding from it. It was over in a couple minutes and that was that. If it was dangerous and caused you to miscarry I really don't think the doctors would make you have one. Like the other poster said they'd find other ways.

They used to do them almost every visit when I was having my first children--20+ years ago. Now, my daughter only seen her dr 2 times, 1 pap test first visit, and delivered by someone she never met. They do the see the nurse until 32 weeks here in indiana. Which is even worse than my daughter.

I always hated the pap checks when I was pregnant always made me feel so bad with cramping and sick to my stomach all day. I hated them, but I wish it wasnt so lax here now either. To one extreme to the other.

They also did a hpv biopsy of my daughters cervix while preg--after they told her they wasnt doing that--they said they were just doing a visual check. I was so pissed I wanted to kick someones a**. Dont mess with my kids or grandkids--im really strict about that.
