What Is "hairy Tongue?"
Posted: 09-04-05 21:43pm

During my first dental exam in many years, due to no insurance, my evaluation stated that I had a hairy tongue. Just what exactly does this mean?
Thanks

I hope this helps..I went to google and typed in hairy tounge...Here is some info for you.

It is important for you to briefly understand what the tongue is
composed of. The tongue is mainly composed of muscles that are covered
with a mucous membrane. There are also smaller tissues on the tongue
that are nodule shaped, called papillae, that cover the top or upper
surface of the tongue. Between these small papillae are the so-called
taste buds which allow us to have the sense of taste. Any change in
appearance of the tongue may signify that either the tongue has a
problem or that another disorder may be present, whether localized or
systemic.

Hairy tongue is an unusual condition where the filiform papillae (one of the papillae types found on the tongue) enlarge. The color of the tongue may become white or another color depending on the cause. However, the cause usually is not just one entity. Some possible causes include microorganisms, especially fungi. Other
explanations include systemic problems like gastric disorders, anemia,
antibiotic therapy, foods, tobacco, chronic debilitating diseases,
excessive use of certain mouthwashes, radiation therapy in the head and
neck region, etc.

In some cases, people may have deep fissures that collect food or
other debris that can mimic hairy tongue. If it is in fact hairy tongue,
it is usually a benign condition and the tongue should be brushed to
remove the debris. This will aid in the removal of the older papillae
and the formation of new healthy ones.

We feel that if you have this condition you should visit your
dentist or oral surgeon at once to evaluate it. A physical
examination by your physician is a good idea. A biopsy may be taken to
make sure that a more serious problem does not exist. One should never
take this condition lightly.

Hope this helps you
