intermittent lower back pain Posted: 08-31-05 05:43am
Hi guys,
i am posting here following 18 months of
back problems with no real resolution of
the problem. Whilst I don't feel it is
directly a spoting injury I hope you do
not mind me posting here. My terminlogy
may not be great and would appreciate it
if you could use simple terminology when
(if) you reply.
My history is this:
for the last three years I have had
intermittent lower back pain, a
grabbing/stabbing pain when I bend over.
I have been to physio's & osteopaths but
they have been unable to do anything
really to releive the pain. Each one has
said that it is a postural issue and that
my lower back is very stiff - 'like a lump
of wood'- I have in light of this been
getting down to the gym with personal
trainer for the last 18 months with a
personal trainer and we have been
concentrating on core stability and trying
to strengthen my lower back. This has had
very little effect. I am normally sore
for a day or so after training but it
subsides again back to a dull ache a day
or so later. I work in an office and spen
approx. 10 hrs a day at a desk stuck in
front of a computer. I have an hour
commute each way to work in a car.
12 months ago my wife gave birth to twin
girls and I am sure they have not helped
situation as the constant picking up &
putting down from awkward positions can be
very painful for me and seems to aggrevate
back after a couple of days.
4 months ago, to cut a very long story
short, I fell over and cracked the back of
my head open on the kerb of a road,
needing stitches. Now the head issue
resolved itself after a few days but I was
left with a tingling/painful feeling in my
right arm for a week or so, my arm felt
very restless and felt like I had to keep
on moving it. But that subsided, and
amazingly back pain seemed to get better -
the quiet before the storm. My back pain
then came back with a vengeance and now as
well as previous pain I had, I began to
get a tingling sensation in the middle of
my back, down my legs and in my fingers
when ever I bent my head forwards. If I
isolate my neck from my back (in terms of
its movement) the tingling does not seem
to occur, it is more when my back
bends/hunches a little when and as I bend
my kneck forwards. Also the tingling
dissappears when I turn my neck from
either left to right. If I hold my neck
in the 'tingling position', the sensation
starts to dissappear after about 5 secs.
It is not painful just an unnerving
sensation, more like a mild electrical
current!
I have been discussing issue and getting
treatment from osteopath but it just
doesn't seem to be getting any better.
I know this is a long post but any help
you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Do you think the two issues are seperate
or one is causing the other. Someone has
mentioned the neck problem being a
potential 'whiplash' injury and not
related to lower back but I feel like
people are guessing.
I did recently have an mri scan on my
lower back and it showed everything to be
normal apart from mild degenerative discs
in my lower back but not something they
thought would cause pain or abnormal for
someone of my age (31 yrs).
Guys any help/advice you could give would
be greatly appreciated.
