I have been diag. W/ sle for 3 years. The plaquenil has seemed to work and my symptoms had lessened and lessened. Recently I have started having flare-up symptoms; sores on the roof of my mouth, nausea and vomiting, fevers, headaches, more joint pain the usual (i also have fibro). I have also developed a strange white dicoloration accross my chin and beside my nose under both eyes. It looks like I splashed bleach on my face. I am black and thought this may be the way it looks in darker complected people. I have looked in books and online at lupus rashes and have found nothing that looks like this but have also not found a picture of any person of color with the rash. Even my Dr. Is not certain if this is from the lupus but it did develop right before the other symptoms-she said it could be or it could be something else. I would like to know....Have any of you had a similar rash or seen it?

Lupus Patient With Unexplained White Spots
I also have sle, but I wanted to tell you that my husband as another autoimmune disease called vitiligo. It causes discoloration on the face, hands and sometimes other parts of the body. He had his face treated at john's hopkins in baltimore maryland. It was treated using skin graphs and after fifteen years it has still not come back. I don't think alot of people realize that it can be treated, so if this is what you have, I wanted to make sure you knew it could be.

Lupus
Hi trusting jc,
I came to this board with the same question. I am of native american descent. I was born with dark skin and got even darker in the summer.
I was diagnosed with sle in 98. Plaquenil is one of my staple medications. I have been on it for 8 years. About 6 years ago, my dark skin went fair and sun exposure left me with nothing, no tan, no burn, just my rash.
Now, I have little circles, disks, if you will on my lower legs, my forearms, chest. They are white..No pigment at all..:(
i have read that plaquenil suppresses melanocyte production. Melanocytes make pigment. I am hoping and praying that these issues are a result of the plaquenil, and not permanent vitiligo. I am going to ask my rheumy on my next appt..

White Lupus Rash?
Hi all

I am a new user to this forum.
I have the same symptom I think. I have a white patch on the side of my face, and under my eyes. I also have a round white spot on my chest and one on my forehead. I am also African American, though very light complexioned. I really began to notice the white spots more after I became tanned this summer. I was really puzzled by this and wondered if it was from the medication. Plaquenil or the steroids. Any thoughts on this?

Right Diagnosis
I think it is difficult to diagnose your real skin condition.
To solve this here is idea for your to test Wood's Lamp apparatus.
it is uv light based device used to diagnose difficult to recognize skin condition. It is easily available in any hospital lab or in dermatology clinics.

This year my allergist order bloodwork, that revealed a positive ANA. I went to a rhuematologist, he told me that he didn't see visiable signs and that I probably had a false-positive reading. Although, I told him about having feelings of tiredness, joint pain, an array of degenerative changes, and arthritic issues with my back.

The reason that my allergist did the blood test was to identify the reason for the outbreak of large brusing on my thighs and upper arms (Purple & Red). In addition, during this period I had numerous outbreaks of hives. My bloodwork revealed that I am extremely allergic and have a positive ANA.

The other day my husband and I were golfing and he saw my face had an extreme amounts of facial discoloration, which is something new for me. I also have large patches/rash on my face (cheek) that are large but not red or prickly.

I am African-American and just wondered if anyone with lumpus had experienced any of these symptoms? Question Question
