Q: Smoking Cannabis And Schizophrenia - What Do You Think?

New research has discovered there is a possible link between smoking cannabis (weed/marijuana) at an adolescent age and developing some sort of mental condition (normally schizophrenia). As such, scientists have found that cannabis available on the streets today is 15 times more powerful than the joints being smoked three decades ago. They offer this a possible reason for why people develop a mental disorder in their lifetime.

So what do you think? Do you think smoking drugs is likely to cause a mental illness?

I think any drug can cause people to go mentally crazy!! Look at the rapper huston I don't know what drug he was on, but he tried to jump off of a building, and gouged his eye out!

Extremely eHealthy
I believe some kind of mental or emotional problem is why pple do drugs. Not the horse after the cart!!! It is a weakness that allows us to harm ourselves, whether drugs in excess, food in excess, cutting or burning oneself, pukeing after eating, starving ourselves. The list goes on and on---in the case of normalcy(which there is no normal)we all have some kind of mental(emotional) dysfunction. All of us in varying degrees. Some to a degree to do destruction to self to punish oneself, or just not care enough about oneself to refrain from it.

God bless us all

That is true. Myself got ill with schizophrenia because smoking weed for like several years. I still smoke occasionally, tho I get very in panic and paranoid (even more than I am straight) I still like it :). Also two good friends that used to smoke with me got their mental health f***ed up. One of them landed in jail for doing some serious sh* and was diagnosticed paranoid shizophrenia. The other moved out of town and I dont know how's he doing but from the times we used to hang out I can tell he was very social anxious and showed other symptoms too. So thats no fairy tale, I can tell... Wish I couldnt tho...

Cannabis is a natural herbal medicine . It may have been used for more than 100000 years . And since 4000 bc in china .

Cannabis doest make you go crazy . But cannabis "sativa" may give you anxiety which may elevate or worsen a mental condition or state . Cannabis "indica" is moe calming and sedating . Helpful for schizophrenia and epilepsy etc.

Most of these studies/research are done by or affiliated with the gov't/dea , and only tell you what they want you to hear/know . They are fight a " war on drugs " ... War = propaganda .

"it's about how we as a society deal with people who use marijuana," grinspoon said, adding, "(marijuana) has never been responsible for a death and I can assure you it has never caused schizophrenia. An accident, a loss of a parent, alcohol or marijuana can precipitate schizophrenia but not cause it."

Say No to Drugs!
Mr steve,
its obvious that the goverment have said its bad for you because theyve had too many people go nuts and there mental hospitals are crammed with messed up ex puffers and other past drug takers. I wouldnt just turn a blind eye to cannabis it can be pretty lethal and is quite capable of turning you the other way( I should know). You seem to be pretty for cannabis mrsteve are you a smoker then?

Not 4 Every One!!!!
Weed might not be for all peoples(schizos), but for myself, well I smoke every day!!!
Yes the standard stuff you get, does raise your "tweak" level, but I find that doing weed once or more a day helps. It's like my lil time to say, ok i'm nuts, now let it fly.
If you're in a safe environment, with someone you "trust" then it's not so bad, but in unfamiliar places or when you're already extremely stressed. Well then it's extremely bad mojo.

I think that just like amphetamines, cannibus can induce psychotic effects but the effects only last while you are delusional, or under the influence.
I used to smoke everyday and sometime I thought I was crazy

Well unfortunately I was diagnosed long before I ever did drugs.
It should be noted that if you are doing drugs and starting to become delusional for the first time. Then chances are it is the drugs. Stop if it clears up then, problem solved. If not, then you need to see someone.
However, if the problem existed before, then you just need to be aware of yourself and your boundaries.
For all the youngsters out there. New research has shown that smoking cannibus from ages 13-21, can induce some forms of schizophrenia. This might not be totally true, they might have faked the data, but coming from a schiz, don't take the chance! If ya need to know what it's like, then wait a few years. This is something you don't want to deal with on the regular.
However, for those of us who are stuck in our situations, ya know. The meds don't help, constantly turning up tv/radio just to drown out the voices or demons, then it might help.
I find that by doing it, it's easier to disregard the comments made. The panic does'nt seem to envelope me as quickly. Don't get me wrong, there are still some times. And during those times I don't touch it.
See our view of reality is skewed. The worst part is a lot of times we don't realize it's skewed. It all seems real. It's plausible that my wife became a vamp last year, right!?! No, but to me it was.
I have an agreement with my shrink, wife and a few people I trust. If they ever lean in and say, "umm, I think you need to lay off" then I stop without question! That's my queue that i'm not seeing things right. Sometimes I notice it myself. If the shadows start coming more and more or start panicing, then I back off.
Being schizo is just a fact of life for some of us. Find your ways to cope. I encourage that, but if your way is like mine, then put in place some safety nets.
Remember you being a schiz does'nt just affect you, but everyone you are close to. You have to be somewhat responsible.
To all of those who are suffering, or feeling your delusions. My heart's out to you.

Reality
Something I had a question about is why do people even really debate what causes anything? There are plenty more marijuana users that don't have a mental disorder as well as those that do. It seems to me that because you smoke marijuana and you happen to have a disorder, then for most people its obviously got to be the marijuana. Why can it not be cigarettes? I mean nicotene is a human poison in higher levels. Its a method for vomiting in medium doses, yet euphoric in smaller doses. Why is that when someone who takes salvia divinorum and hallucinates, no one blames the salvia for their mental disturbances, because the government has said its perfectly safe, safe enough atleast that its legal. The problem with most or your arguments is that you don't indefinantly prove anything. Marijuana cannot be indefinantly proven to cause anything aside from what you feel from the thc. Hell, you can't indefinantly prove that schizophrenia didn't happen because of your junk dna (in the genomes of most plants and animals, an overwhelming percentage of the dna serves no known biological role) suddenly becoming activated by the numerous known and unknown forces in you're general area of inhabitance. You can't really prove your mental disorder wasn't caused by a small pebble-sized comet hitting you in the head (sarcasm, yet a thought to consider). When one "hallucinates", who can prove what they see isn't real? That could help explain why 86% of 70 people treated returned with the same symptoms. That is far too high a percentage to even call that treated. I'm not going to say the demon attacking you is real, but how can anyone prove its not? You may say, "well look here, this part of the brain is activated showing that its just a chemical imbalance". I will say, "shut up", you're only proving what the brain is doing, not why. Can marijuana cause mental disorders? Maybe, maybe not. Maybe it can for some and not for others. Alcohol is legal, and who said it can't be that? The brain is a very strange place to make accusations, the mind even more so.
