Do I Need My Right Ovary Removed? Please Help!!! Posted: 08-26-05 12:32pm
On april 28th I had a tumor removed from
my left breast. On may 2nd I was told it
was cancer, I had invasive ductal
carcinoma, and every inch they removed was
cancer, they did not get it all. On may
2nd I had a ct scan to see if the cancer
had spread. Two days later I was told
that they did not find anything in my
liver or lungs, but they found my appendix
enlarged, and tumors on my left tube and
ovary. On may 11th I had surgery to
remove my left tube, left ovary and
appendix, all came back benign for cancer,
thank god. During a pre-op visit a lump
was discovered in my right breast, so on
may 25th I had a double mastectomy. I
had expanders and a chemo port placed
during the surgery. During the next few
weeks I was told that all 16 lymph nodes
they removed in the left side were clean,
and my pet scan was clean, no more
cancer!!! Because of this my oncologist
suggested that I take arimidex instead of
chemotherapy, but this would require me to
have my right ovary removed first. He
told me I had a few weeks to decide and
during the next few weeks I had two
expansion fills, and then a massive
infection set in. On june 30th I was
admitted to the hospital. On july 2nd I
was told I had cellulitis and it had
decided to attack my chest, and everything
foreign in my body, and I needed emergency
surgery. At 9:30pm on saturday night I
had all the expansion tissue removed, the
two fill ports, the chemo port, a chest
wall scrape and a lot of tissue removed
from my chest area because of this
infection. I was sent home 4 days later
with a pic line in my arm so I could still
give myself iv's of antibiotics twice a
day for 10 days. Then I was on oral
antibiotics twice a day for 30 days. This
time the plastic surgeon said he will wait
until I have been off the antibiotics for
30 days (to make sure the infection
doesn't return) then wait another 30 days
before we begin reconstruction again. He
wants to give me time to heal. But, at
this same time I will need to have my
right ovary removed so I can begin the
arimidex is it absolutely necessary for
me to do this? Isn’t there any other
cancer drug that may help prevent the
cancer from returning? Is it worth the
stress of going through menopause early?
If anyone has any ideas please let me
know. I only have a little while to
decide. Right now I am not being treated
for cancer at all, I just had the double
mastectomy. When I go in for the next
surgery to have the expanders put back in
I need to let them know my next step as
far as cancer treatments. Please help, I
am lost as to what to do or where to look
for the right answer. Thanks for
listening. Susan king

Wow....Sorry you had to go through all
this...You are a fighter....
As for the early menopause, as far as I
know you can take hormones to prevent
that...Call your doctor and ask him/her
about this alternative...I am in no
position to give advice but you have been
through so much that I believe you should
go all the way with this and have your
right ovary removed.
You doubt about that medicine being the
only one to help...I'm very sorry I can't
help you there. I strongly suggest that
you get a second and third opinion from
other specialists and see if there is
another medicine you can use. Your
situation is much to serious not to do
that.
Maybe you'll let us know what you decided
and how everything went.
I respect you for being so brave.
Good luck!

I don't feel very brave, but thanks for
saying that. It has totally sucked! I
just hope I can continue to hold on to
hope and get through this. I know I can
take medication to offset the menopause,
but it won't help with the possible sexual
side affects as well. There is more
medication for that, and medication for
the hot flashes, and medication for the
mood swings, and medication to replace the
hormones, and medication for the cancer.
See what I mean? It is a tough decision,
but like you said, I have made it this far
I might as well get it all done now. I
will keep you posted. Thanks for the
reply and for making me feel a little
better. Susan

I'm sorry there's nothing I can do to help
you. Just keep thinking positive...It
says in your profile that you like to be
outside with your kids so there you have
it: their innocence will give you hope
when you feel you have lost it...
I'm sure you will make the right decision
regarding the operation, whatever that
is...
And even though you don't feel very brave
right now, trust me you are and you will
see things more clearly once this is
behind you...Just a little more
patience...
My thoughts are there with you.
Good luck!

Alternative Medicine Posted: 09-03-05 22:17pm
You should really consider alternative
medicine to complement what you are
actually going through.
I can provide you some information as to
what to look for.
For example, there exist a mushroom from
china that's been used in studies to show
it's effects on treating breast cancer.
Drop me an e-mail with your phone number
and i'll give you more information.
