The ring itself can cause hair loss, so if you don't want to lose hair then don't use it... :/

Wouldn't it be nice if it was contained to genital hair loss?

Just a thought.... Wink

Hair Loss And the Nuvaring
Hi....so glad I found this forum. I have also noticed that I am losing hair!!! I am going to take it out this month and then have an IUD inserted. My question is....has anyone noticed that their hair returns to normal after removal? Does your hair grow back? I am going to a derm on Thursday, but tonight I am in a panic!

Nuvaring And Hair Loss : In Belgium Too !
I just wanted to report another case of Nuvaring and hair loss.

I was prescribed this BC method some sixt months ago but after suffering terrible migraines every month all along my 7 days periods, I decided to take it out. I had also noticed abnormal hair loss and after outruling all other possible causes (thyroid, medication, stress, emotional chock...), my dermatologist suggested it could be related to the Nuvaring as well.

It's been 5 weeks I'm off it now, but my hair is still falling dramatically. Fortunately I had a lot, otherwise I'd be bald as an egg by now! But I also wonder if and when it will stop falling and start growing normal ! Any comforting exeprience to share welcome...

Thank you and greetings from Brussels !

The hair loss should stop once your body finally returns to normal.

That's comforting, for sure, but how long do you think this might take ?

Well anywhere from right away to a week or two- probably not much longer than that.

Sad That's not good. Are you getting your period normally??

It's also not good that you were getting bad migraines at the time, did you tell your doc about it?

"Migraines and stroke. Women who take oral contraceptive and have a history of migraines have an increased risk of stroke compared to nonusers with a history of migraine. Your risk is greatest if you have migraines with "aura"--neurologic symptoms related to vision, such as blurred vision, temporary loss of vision or seeing flashing lights or zigzag lines. As a result, both the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have concluded that for women over age 35 who get migraines, the risks of BCPs use usually outweigh the benefits."

Georgia,

My period have been normal and regular all the time, altough not fitting exactly in the week gap between two rings.

Yes, I did tell my gyneacologist about the migraines. He said it could happen with any hormonal birth control method but didn't think it was a sufficient reason to stop it. Nevertheless, I took my ring off and the migraines stopped spectacularly (same day !). But he firmly denied any correlation between the hair loss and the ring... which I found a bit arrogant given all the testimonies I found on the Internet going in that way. I hope to have a further conversation with him soon about that.

Anyway, I'm seeing my dermatologist in 2 weeks and if there's no improvement with my hair loss, I expect he's going to prescribe a treatment.

Is there still no progress towards official recognition of the hair loss side effect ? Have the Nuvaring officials been questioned yet by your FDA, or consumer rights movemnts? On this side of the planet not, as it seems, and I found no trace of a citizen forum about it either.

Hair Loss And the Nuvaring
I went to my dermatologist last week and he told me to take 2.5 mg of biotin (a B vitamin). I told him that I thought I was losing hair because of the nuvaring and he agreed. Has anyone here noticed any hair regrowth or just that your hair stops falling out after removing the ring?

Hmm... well I was wondering if your periods have been regular since you've been off it, because that would be a sign that your body was maybe back to normal.

Good luck at the dermatologist, I hope it works out well for you. I've heard that nuvaring can cause hair loss but I know some doctors like to think that patients make things up lol... my doc didn't believe that I gained 20 lbs in 7 months because of birth control, but that was it, I promise!!

I haven't heard of any questioning or anything like that. I hope it works out well for you.

a Little Confused
Ok so i understand this whole nuvaring thing is a once a month procedure. But my question is...during that one week that you leave it out are you protected as well? Because from what i understand...if it's left out for more than 3 hours you're no longer protected...can someone please help me figure this out?

You're supposed to have your periods during the week between two rings...

Pain For Penises
I was on Nuvaring for 2 months and apparently it was painful for my boyfriend's penis and created a wound on his banjo string! so in the end it was more of a hassle to take it out and put it back in after sex. Now I'm on nothing and we use condoms instead, but my sex drive is still non-existent!

You are supposed to get your period during that week, and you are protected during that time.

No babies- you could see your doc or a sex therapist who might suggest ways to boost your sex drive.

Side Effects
I've only been on NuvaRing for about four days. The past few days I've had headaches and my back has hurt as well. The second day I woke up in the morning and was extremely nauseous and had a headache. Today I have been really dizzy and have been shaking. I have hypoglycemia, but even after eating regularly I am still shaky. I also noticed more discharge then normal... I don't know if I should call the doctor, but I have felt really sick the past couple of days and it doesn't seem worth it.

ACHES warning signs:

If you have any of these warning signs well on birth control, get to a doctor asap. Especially the leg pain one (that's what my doc said) These are signs of blood clots and stroke.

# Abdominal pain
# Chest pain (also shortness of breath)
# Headaches (especially those that are new, severe, or associated with persistent dizziness, difficulty speaking, fainting, numbness or weakness in extremities
# Eye problems (blurred vision or loss of vision)
# Severe leg pain (and/or redness and swelling in the calf or thigh)

If you develop any of the ACHES side effects or jaundice (a yellowing of the eyes or skin) while on BCPs, call your doctor right away. If you need emergency medical attention, call the hospital. If you are out of town, contact a local health provider or go to a hospital emergency room.

My doctor prescribed the nuvaring, but I'm really doubing that I want to be on it. Right off the bat, I was having doubts, and after reading about some of these side effects, I'm honestly a little scared.

I started it yesterday, and got a pretty bad headache an hour or so after putting it in. That's since passed, and I feel fine today, but I would like to change to the pill. I wanted to be on the pill originally, but my doctor sort of rushed me into getting the nuvaring. Does anyone know about changing from the nuva ing to the pill? I liked the idea that I could have sex within a week of starting, so I'd like to finish using it for the month and then change over. Is the switchover easy, or would I have to wait a month after switching?
