The bright red that you're describing, does it look slightly orangish by any chance? Like bad slasher movie fake blood? I think I may have the same problem. I just started my period today and I'm almost 20 and the blood on the toilet paper was really bright and had an orange tint. (I bleed really heavily and I know there was too much blood for it to just have been spread thin enough to look that way)
