Cause of High Blood Sugar Posted: 11-25-03 18:24pm
I just had a blood test, and my blood
sugar level came back high, after fasting.
I need to get further tests, but I was
wondering if there are other causes for
hyperglycemia than diabetes. Any ideas?
Blood glucose level should not be above 7
mmol/L two hour after eating. That is, in
fact, the diagnostic criterion for
diabetes. Anyway, diabetes can not be
diagnosed according to one glucose
measuring. Further testing, such as a
fasting plasma glucose, random plasma
glucose, or two-hour postprandial plasma
glucose level, need to be performed. What
was your blood glucose level after
fasting?
Other disorders, beside diabetes, that can
cause hyperglycemia could be:
1. eating disorders (bulimia nervosa);
2. some medications (beta blockers,
thiazide diuretics, corticosteroids,
niacin, pentamidine, protease inhibitors,
L-asparaginase,[1] and some antipsychotic
agents);
3. acute stress such as stroke or
myocardial infarction;
4. during times of infection and
inflammation.
