For over a month now this condition has gotten progressively worse. The tastes and smells of foods/beverages that I once loved now are repulsive to me, to the point of avoiding them completely. Same holds true for odors that once didn't bother me - bath products, toothpaste, soaps/cleaners, flower scents, to name a few - in that now I have to hold my nose to stop from gagging.

I'm not on any medication. I've had two antibiotics which did no good (doctor thought it might be severe, embedded sinus infection, though I had no symptoms of such). I had a ct scan to rule out brain tumor, which showed no abnormalities.

And this is not a loss of sense of smell or taste, which many people assume. Rather it's a distortion of smell and taste (dysosmia/dysgeusia respectively). If anyone has experieced this before and has any other suggestions, i'd surely appreciate hearing of them. I'm resorting to eating very bland food, simple carbs (which i'd been trying to avoid prior), and have had to cross off nearly every fruit and vegetable from my list of "approved" foods.

Thanks!

Smell/taste Disorder
This was four years ago and all I can tell you is that my condition improved to nearly 100% normal, but it took about a year. It was gradual. A taste/smell clinic in Wash. DC has a theory that having a flu bug can cause it - I did have one in April of 2005. I couldn't afford to go get it checked out, though. Good luck!

Smell/taste Disorder
I have the same problem you have for two month now (started in december 2008 after i had a cold. when i eat the following foods i smell and taste formaldehyde, foods are: (strawberry, cantaloupe, apple, some kinds of cheese, banana, and black olive). also, some kind shampoos, some soaps, and toothpaste. i smell alcohol when some one is wearing a cheap cologne or perfume. other than that i smell most of the food and enjoy eating them with no problems. i went to a specialist and i made a ct, everything checked ok except that i was told that my sinus have an infection. the doctor gave me a shot weekly of vitamin b complex, some kind of nasal spray (rhinocort)twice a day, neurovit three times daily (vitamin b1,b6,b12), and zyrtec once before bed. i want to get rid of this exhausting feeling asap.

Does anyone smell peanuts?
My friend is complaining of smelling an earthy, peanut smell. He notices it in his head and also in his urine? Anyone have a clue?

I googled and found myself here. I have been suffering from a smelling disorder for about five or six weeks. I too smell an earthy smell in my urine, orange juice, wine, peanuts and bread ... and many other foods. Some foods 'exhibit' this odor more than others ... and I know for a fact this 'problem' is with me and not with the foods.

I've seen my family doctor and her questions went immediately to my sinus. I would appear not to have any sinus problems; I have no headaches per se or pain in my face, but if I still have this problem at the end of the summer she suggested I make another appointment. She also thought seeing an ear, nose, throat specialist wouldn't probably help me (in this particular case).

I'm 59, work out almost daily and apart from this am in excellent health. I had a very bad cold (with a lot of coughing) several months ago and wonder if that was somehow related.

Many years ago (25 or so) I experienced a similar thing - it seemed that foods that contained vinegar tasted very strange. It took me a little while before I realize the 'problem' was with me and not with the foods. I blamed that episode on a flu I had had.

If anyone has anything personally to share that could help me, feel free to contact me personally.
