Unexplained Weight Gain While Severely Restricting Posted: 08-20-05 08:10am
I have a question about something that has
really hindered my recovery process. I
have been going to an outpatient ed center
for about 1 year. For a while, I was only
going because my parents made me. I
refused to listen to the advice from
professionals and ate the same thing every
day. My diet was less than 1200 cals and
very high fiber. I would have 4 servings
of all bran a day for my carb intake.
This made me extremely bloated and
constipated. 6 months into treatment, I
went on a trip to mexico. I had just
started taking zelnorm to regulate my
bowels and by the time I got back, they
said I had lost 8 pounds, even though I
had increased the amount and variety in my
diet on the trip. I freaked out because
they told me how much I had been before
leaving. It was six pounds more than I
was in the morning on my scale, which
gives the same reading as the ed center's.
I know I was water logging, but I still
can't get over that number. Was it real
weight? I struggle with that greatly
because I decided to really try to
recover. Now I am eating meals with
family and having normal foods, but I am
continuing to lose weight. I'm just so
scared that something is going to happen
again where I gain all this weight without
knowing it. I'm more than 20 lbs less now
and it just doesn't make sense. I have
tons of energy now and am not hungry and
when I was at that high weight, I was
starving and had no energy!!! Please
help!

Well often eating disorders really screw
up your body's metabolism. Throwing up
and starving your body all make your body
confused- whether to absorb the calories
or not. This is the main problem with the
aftermath of ed. The answer is unique to
every person. Ask your doctor.

Well, I've Increased My Calories Too Posted: 08-20-05 15:37pm
I haven't lost weight, but I haven't
gained weight either. I am warmer and
have more energy and am in a better mood.
It is like eating more made my body feel
like it had permission to burn the
calories to get what it needed.

There is no need to be scared at all.
When your body is starving because you are
not eating it tends to hord all the fats
and things which it needs to keep going
and so you tend to not lose weight but
muscle tissue instead. However when your
body is being nutrished regulary your
metablobism begins to go back to normal
and processes the food faster then it
would if you were starving yourself. As a
result you tend to lose weight but remain
healthy as well. Recovery does not mean
you have to put on weight, recovery means
you get freedom from your negative
thoughts and you are able to live a life
which is fulfilling but most importantly
recovery means you learn to love yourself
and be happy with who you are.
There is no need to worry about your
weight lose as long as you are eating
healtily and are not starving yourself.
I hope everything is going well for you,
you are very strong to want to recover I
really think you are a very brave and
inspirating person. Well done!
