Hello. I have a concern. Last august (one year ago) I quit using all forms of birth control. I was using depo provera from june '02- oct'03. In oct '03 I started on ortho evra (oe), because I was constanly nervous about not having periods. By august '04, I still had not seen my period, even while using the oe patch, so I quit using birth control altogether. By nov, my periods started coming back, but very very light. Mar '05, I completely missed my monthly altogether, and then starting in april I began bleeding very heavily, with large clots. This is constant bleeding, too. No cramping or pain of any kind, just losing alot of blood. I bled very heavily for 4 months straight, then I get a week off just long enough to get a check up at the health department. The nurse practicioner there said this is all due to the hormones of both birth controls getting out of my system. She said that constant bleeding for up to 3-4 months is normal in said situation. Wellllllll... Guess what, i'm bleeding again. Only 1 week after my exam. No cramping, no clotting, just bright red and thin blood, but i'm flooding the super plus tampons a pad in a matter of a couple of hours.

Is there anyone here who has had ill effects after quitting depo provera or ortho evra? I read alot of horror stories about ill effects while using the birth controls, but I never see any side effects of quitting either.

Please give me some insight,

thank you!

I'm so sorry, I don't know what to tell you, I was on the depo shot for 6 years, quit that and got onto the pill, I am now off of all forms now and have been since june and nothing like that happened to me. My first cycle was a little messed up, but that was about the extent of it. I would say to go to another doc just to get a second oppinion.

Dont Know If This Will Help
I've been posting all over the board about my new discovery. I had other forms of irregular hormone, such as painful period, long period, heavy bleeding, spotting almost every day, etc. I started taking vitamin b complex, and one a day women's recently. 3 months after I took them, my period is absolutely normal, with no pain, only 30 day cycles, no spotting, etc.
You may want to try that. Vit b 2, 6, 12 are known to be essential to keep woman's cervix and hormones regulated.

Good luck.

I have the same problem..Since about 15 or so I get a period that lasts between 2 and 7 months and then I don't have one at all for between 12 and 24 months....Heavy bleeding (double pads etc.) I need to change once an hour to be able to leave the house. I have days that I can't get out of bed b/c i'm too weak. I have no pain at all which the drs find strange. We've done hormone workups and all is well. They tell me that this may be normal for me.
I am now 32 and this is still ongoing. I have never been on the depo shot and have not been on birth control since I was 18 or so. I don't think the shot is the problem sweetie. I have managed to have 2 kids although they don't know how!!!
Keep harassing your doctor...Don"t give up!!! I know the frustration that goes with this. If you find an answer, keepo in touch b/c i'd love to see this come to an end someday. I'll keep your email in case I find an answer first.

I Know Where U Are Coming From
I have my son in december and I got the depo shot in jan. I started to research it because it was starting to become painful to have sex. I decided that I didn't want to take the shot anymore so I quit. I didn't get on any other birthcontrol. In may I had a period for a month and a week. I went to my doc and he gave me a menapause patch to wear for a week and I did. I stopped bleeding and had a normal period for a couple months then around the middle of sept. I got my period and I was on it for close to a month now i'm just spotting. I think it's because of the shot. On a website I was looking at it said the shot takes six months to a year to get out of your system and thats only after 1 shot.

prolonged menstrual bleeding
Hi I am 49 and have skipped two periods. I loved it as am a heavy bleeder, clots,.... sometimes have to stay home when this happens. So, I skipped one, then had a pretty good one, then skipped another and am now experiencing the period from hell. I have been bleeding for over two weeks, with a one day off, then started up again. Also, I have had two days of heavy clots a week apart. It almost seems like I am having two long periods with a day off in between. I also feel crampy. Has this ever happened to anyone? I don't know whether to just wait it out . L

prolonged menstrual bleeding
I am 31 and have a daughter. I have been on depo before but stopped after I grew humongously obese. I took pills off and on and then stopped. Pretty normal periods until my dad passed away last year and the funeral was very very very stressful and ugly. Slowly my periods became more and more irregular until now.

Over a month ago, I started to bleed - very slightly - more like spotting. Then I went to acupuncture therapy for stress. The same day my bleeding became heavier and heavier. After a week, the bleeding became less. I told this to my acupuncture therapist and she gave me some treatment. For a couple hours I had no bleeding. Then it started again. I have always had clots in my periods before, but these are big clots and look like tissue. I am scared! I dont have health insurance and I am afraid to go to a gynaecologist.

I am going to try to Vitamin B and hope it helps. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Relieved to know I am not the only one though!!!

You might want to have your ob/gyn check you for fibroid tumors or ovarian cysts. They cause heavy bleeding and irregular periods. I've had them for about a year now and find that I'll bleed HEAVILY for weeks at a time, the last one lasted from March 13th to April 25th and now, a little over two weeks later, I am bleeding AGAIN! The blood is normally bright red, and pass clots often, sometimes it feels like my uterus has burst and blood just floods out. I can't use tampons, they're useless. I have to change pads several times a day and sometimes I find the only thing that helps from causing a huge, embarrassing mess is to wear Depends. There are several options for treatment, but the only ones I was offered was birth control (which I cannot take due to clotting problems) or hysterectomy. I'm waiting to hear back about a new appt from a different ob/gyn for a second opinion.

I suspect that Depo had something to do with the fibroid development, as it threw my hormones out of whack. My period has been abnormal ever since I had that bloody shot back in 2001.
