Q: to Have Or Not to Have a Hysterectomy

Im 42 and for the pass 10 yrs my periods have been getting worse, I remember in 98 my gyno telling me that I should have the operation because of the heavy bleeding and painfull cramps, at 32 I was scared of the induced menopause symptoms. Now at 42 after getting an ultrasound my doctor tells me that I have a polyp, not many as I first thought but one very big polyp and thats why the pain is probably in my back and down my legs and im clotting so bad that I would have to stay in bed im so weak. Now im thinking when I go see my gyno he will tell me that a dnc is all I need but im thinking polyps do come back and why dont I just have the hyterectomy. I do however want to keep my ovaries but my friends and relatives are telling me its better to have the ovaries removed because its safer for me (cancer, cyst,ect....) now I realy dont know what to do, can anyone shed some light on the ovaries problem if removed or kept.

Edna,
I had had medical problems badly since I was 15 and when I was 19, and just had a baby, they said hystorectomy. I said no. Waited many many moons, and operations and 2 kids later, I had no choice but to have one. As my last child brought my uterus out with his birth and the operation could not repair the damage.
I was 30 yo and they took it all ! I woke up in what I thought was "hell", because I was burning up. They put a patch on me and then it went away in a few days.
I'm 38 yo now and it's been 8 yrs of bliss !! No periods, no pain, no operations, no hot flashes, no night sweats, etc, etc... I went all natural for the symptoms and haven't had to take anything for the last 5 yrs for symptoms... As I have none !! Now it's just sex, sex, sex... And no worries !
I say if you're tired of the pain and you aren't looking for any more babies, then do it ! What will you have to loose?
Again, they took everything in me and I am fine ! My mom kept her ovaries and one died finally and then the other start dying and she had to take meds  everyone will be different... Do what you want to do.

Thanks for the reply...Ppmharley, I realy appreciate it. I know the decision is mine to make and boy it does sound easy when you say it...But deep down inside its the fear of what can happen that keeps me from doing the right thing for me.......I figure menopause will happen soon anyway (45-55yrs) why not get an ealy start, but he biggest fear for me is taking hormone pills to make my menopause symptoms better only to find that years later I have other problems because of it.

Hysterectomy Or Not
It's such a personal decision. After two surgeries to remove fibroids, I decided that this time, 9 fibroids and the pain and floods was more than I needed any more. I opted for a hysterectomy, keeping my ovaries and tubes. Hopefully, that means that I don't have to mess with any hormones. If I do, i'll figure it out. I can look forward to wearing anything I want, driving, flying, horse back riding and not worrying that I would have a major leak. It's very freeing. I just got out of the hospital, so I can't speak from too much experience, i'm just optimistic...So far, so good. I'm 44, no children. I held out as long as I could and realised that children will not happen for us. So I don't need this uterus afterall!

Is what will happen to me if I don't do a hormone replacement? Does anyone have any suggestions and or comments, or even a ? For me... I'd be so glad to hear and or help in any way. Thanks, glenda

Dear Luci1982 and welcome to ehealth....I wish I met you under a different Topic here and not as painful, but this must be addressed....I am very familiar with the subject that you are speaking of....

I had periods like you do.....Sometimes I would pass clots the size of a plum....It would physically drain me....I had to use the Tampon and Hospital Size Pad just to enclose it...Many times I would have to use two of them....After my period I would be drained...Finally I went to the doctor as I, like you, needed help...

When I talked to him he was more than concerned...This was just an Internal Medicine Physician....He had done the blood tests on me and called me the next day....He said I was severely anemic....This had to come out but before this was done I had to be built up...I was sent to a OB-GYN and a battery of tests were done on me....I had to take Iron tablets for I am not sure how long before the surgery...Quite a few blood tests...I recall the night they checked me in I was again having my period... Proved this to them in the morning when they got me up for surgery...I tried to tell them to put two big pads on me for the night and they didn't listen...Shocked them to death....But, I am sure you know of the story I am telling....You, too, live there...

The difference between you and I is age....I was 47 and you are 26....I had my children....All three of them....You will have none....But, is this sacrifice possibly worthy of your life???.....Not in my books...If I would have had to do this earlier for my life or whatever reason, I would have done it....I endured the hell of years of terrible periods and the stress of another breaking out and being worse than the last...Besides that, it wears you down and eventually could put you in a position where it could take your life....

I can only speak of what I know....When they took mine out, they took my ovaries too, as he said they did not look good....Either way, it has never affected me in a negative way....I am still hornier than all get out.....

If I can help you in any way PM me or ask it here....I am here to help....

I send you my love,
Caroline

I am 39 yrs of age and have been having problems with bleeding for 15 plus years. After finding fibroid tumors, I opted for the Myomectomy(removal of fibroids)with the understanding that they may appear again. That was in 2003 and everything was going well until mid 2006 when the heavy bleeding and pain returned. This time I chose the birth control method to shrink the tumors and perhaps decrease the bleeding and pain. I was satisfied with that until the pain increased (i.e. lower back). Now its 2008, went to my gyn to find out other methods of treating fibroids besides surgery. Did not want to undergo sx again. She informed me that she could perform an Endometrial Ablation. I agreed and I was feeling much much better during my cycle (at least for the next 6 mos that is). I dealt with the pain and bleeding for 7 months. It's 2009, just recently had a vag ultrasound and am told I have numerous 3cm fibroids. I'm not hesitating with a decision, hysterectomy it is. Although I would like a full, my gyn insist that I have a partial because my ovaries are good. So in the next week or so, I will be undergoing surgery.

Keep me in your prayers

I had a hysto but kept my ovaries. no med reason to take them. i feel great but already have kids. If you want a kid, get pregnant, married or not. Then make a decision on the surgery. No period for 8 or 9 months might convince you.
