More Information - Really Concerned For My Cousin
Posted: 11-25-03 05:59am

Hey everyone,

as u all know im not ready to conceive but am counting the days, I have a cousin who is happily married and already has a child and at present is pregnant with twins :d the only problem is she has developed this condition im not sure what it is or what it does but I was wondering if any one knew anything about it. Apparently when u have twins there is suppose to be two umbilical cords is that right well in this pregnancy there is only one. She has been put on complete bed rest and they are going to induce her in six weeks I think it is. Does anyone know what the condition is or any information would be so much appreciated.

From someone who cant wait to have a jellybean all of their own :p

I was just reading this last night, fraternal twins have serpate placenta as identical twins share their placenta, but each baby has their own umbilical cord..

Identical twins are formed when a single fertilized egg splits early indevelopment and grows into two fetuses, both with the same genetic makeup. These monozygotic (meaning from one egg) twins will look exactly alike.

Fraternal twins born at the same time but resulting from the fertilization of two different eggs, fraternal twins are no more genetically similar than siblings.

I hope this helps you..

Thanks trish for the information. It helped a fair amount, I was wondering though if there is only one umbilical cord does that mean that the twins are siamese or conjoined. I think that is our main concern

I think if they were conjoined or siamese that it would be clearly visible on an ultrasound....Your doctor is obviously not being thorough enough and should be explaining what's going on to your cousin

The doctor is being thorough enough its the rest of the family I think she is worried about telling us the entire story so I thought if I could understand a bit more about what happens when u r pregnant with twins and there is only one umbilical cord is might help the rest of the family understand wots going on. I guess wot im really asking is if there are any complications that can occur.

I would maybe tell her that the family is very worried and you would like to know.. Ask her gently and tell her your worried and would like to be there for her... I'm sure she would tell you and would like a shoulder to cry on as well...
