Q: Removal of Melanoma And Scarring

I just had a mole on my back removed which turned out to be melanoma. The incision is about the size of a dime maybe a little bit smaller. The doctor says that they now have to go back and remove more just in case any bad cells remained around the original incision. They also want to remove and test a lymph node under my arm, just in case. He says that the scar on my back will be about 7 inches long! Does anyone know about first doing some other procedure that would be less drastic which can see if the cells are bad? Thank you for any information!

Melanoma Surgery
I don't know of another procedure. You definitely want to remove the margins around the melanoma to make sure they are clear of cancer. I had a melanoma removed 2 1/2 years ago from my hip and have a scar there. Because melanoma is such an aggressive cancer, i'm just thankful that I caught it early. The scarring means nothing to me. I'm happy to be alive. Once your surgery is over and your scar is healing, you can use different types of solutions to help the scar heal and make it less noticeable. I hope your lymph node biopsy comes back clear. Good luck and if you need to talk, i'm here.
