They Don't Want to Tell Me....
Posted: 08-11-05 13:06pm

My doctor and therapist don't want to tell me what my diagnosis is. My therapist says we will just say I have a disorder and we will treat the symptoms. She also says that sometimes if people know then they may unconsciously take on symptoms they didn't have before. Maybe thats true in some cases, but I have to know. It's not fair for it to be a secret.
I was telling her about things that were going on with me and she said something that happens is called flight of ideas, which goes along with my diagnosis, and when I said whats the diagnosis she gives me this crap about just calling it a disorder. I did some research on "flight of ideas" and looks like it is a symptom of bipolar disorder, but that makes no sense to me, because other than just the racing mind I don't have any other mania symptoms.
I feel like I am obsessing over this now. I have to find out. When I go back to therapy monday I am demanding to know what is wrong with me.

Is this a common practice, not telling the patient??

You Have a Right to Know..

What it is, however doctors don't like to diagnose, because it becomes a self-fulfilling prophercy. For example, if you tell someone they have cancer and there mind believes it, there body will deteriorate, however if you don't tell the patient. It is easier for them to make a full recovery, as they don't feel despair and fulfill the prophercy. I have seen many people overcome adversity.

Also, sometimes a doctor doesnt know what is wrong, and doesn't want to give a wrong diagnosis. Perhaps get a second oppinion to put your mind at ease. Also suggest that they solve the problem, not solve the syptoms, doctors are all to good at giving you drugs to mask the symptoms without getting rid of the problem.

Speak to them about what the problem is, demand an explaination, or a second oppinion and ask them how you go about ridding yourself of the problem, you may need help for the symptoms, but make sure this is not all they give you and they adress the root problem.

Good luck, excuse the spelling i'm abit lazy today.

Take care honey x

I am demanding to know at my next appointment. If they won't tell me what it is, and from the way they talk to me I do believe they know, I will have to go somewhere else.
I feel like if I know I can cope with it better because I can research it and talk with others who have it etc. I have to find out. I wasn't well for a long time and I finally went for some help and I have a right to know.

Bye them not telling you,you are being held in limbo. Not good for the mind

get up stand up for your right my dear.

Things like this just boils my blood.

Your last comment suggests to me that you are ready to now whatever it is that they are holding back from you.

Dam it I cant stand proffesionals like that.

Aproach this situation calmly, tell it straight relaxed.

Please let me no how you got on

i can understand that some poeple after hearing some bad news. You can fall to peaces. As the subliminal mind gets depressed.Creating a domino effect within yourself.

Keep a positive mental attitude and you should handle this fine.

I got a feeling you are about to tell some proffesionals that its just not on.

Wishing you all the best.

Stay strong

Well, I demanded to know and I got answers. They think I have schizophrenia.
I was told not to do any research on it, though. It's too late for that because as soon as I heard the voices I researched everything it could possibly be. I really don't think knowing about it is going to hurt me in any way. Knowledge is power, right? And I have been taking my meds so I am doing well. Even though it's an awful diagnosis, I feel relieved to at least know what is wrong with me.

I am pleased to hear that it has enlightened you.

May I suggest that you stop your research for the time being.

Take some time out for yourself and write down all that you have learnt in your research.

Also on your next appointment tell your doctors that you have been researching the condition.

Give your doctors the paper that you have written in accordance to your own research.

Please keep your original doctors, you have pushed through a barrier of trust and understanding.

You are all working together as a team. By all means get a second opinion.

Your doctors are there for you trust them my friend.

Knowledge is power.Hmmm.Knowledge is understanding, its what you do with the knowlegde don't panic.

Remember your doctors where concerned as to how you would react.

Turn it into something wonderful. You never know, you just may be the next biggest writer etc, etc.

Build up your confidence
congratulations my friend

regards paul
