Hello everyone. I’m new here and like you all i’m looking for answers. Basically i’m a complicated case but i’ll try to just give you the important bits.
I’m 23 and was diagnosed hypothyroid when I was 20. Just six months after being diagnosed and prescribed thyroxine I developed sudden and very severe double vision. Because i’d had squint as a child, all the doctors I saw jumped on the diagnosis of ‘relapsed squint’. I never believed that was the cause. I had a lot of pain behind my eyes particularly at night but no protrusion which is a usual indicator of thyroid eye disease. Clutching at straws I tried in vain to get someone to look at the possibility that it was due to something else – maybe linked to thyroid disease. I took steroids reluctantly prescribed by my gp and got severely told off by hospital consultants – but hey, I could see perfectly whilst on them and my eyes have been better ever since, although the double has come back. I eventually had an mri which revealed a pituitary cyst – which although close to eye nerves, i’ve been told never has or never will cause damage that would lead to double vision. Another dead end!
I’ve now been diagnosed with autoimmune thyroiditis. The diagnosis initially told to me was primary hypothyroidism, are these two conditions different?
A couple of months ago I was hypothyroid, and asked to take thyroxine. But after the neuro people asked me to stop it for a while to see what happens to my pituitary cyst, i’ve been unable to tolerate it at all (i just get symptoms of hyperthyroidism even when I take the smallest doses). I have a very high level of antibodies to the thyroid, could this be making me more sensitive to thyroxine?
Right now, my thyroid function is correct, well in the normal range. I’ve been hypo and hyper recently, and although at the moment biochemically euthyroid, I feel hyperthyroid. Could my pituitary cyst be affecting the result of my blood tests?
Can autoimmune thyroiditis cause you to fluctuate for a while before eventually it settles on hypothyroid need thyroxine supplements?
I understand that hypothyroid and even euthyroid people can get thyroid eye disease – i’m very interested to hear from anyone who has had eye disease who perhaps didn’t fit the classic profile of a graves patient.

Any advice / info much appreciated. Many thanks, hayley

Thyroid And Pituitary Difficulties
I have substantial thyroid antibodies as well as pituitary antibodies. I also feel that I am sometimes hyperthyroid and other times hypothyroid. Although my thyroid production has always tested within normal limits. I have been told by a doctor at Johns Hopkins that 20% of hypothyroid patients and 15% of hyperthyroid patients have antibodies to their pituitary as well. Perhaps you could investigate the angle of pituitary antibodies as a possibility.
