Since I was diagnosed, I was able to get my blood sugar pretty well in check. I am not quite there yet. But helpful foods are veggies and eating things that aren't white. In a lot of ways, a diabetes diet, is a real diet. No white foods like white rice, pasta, and white bread because it all turns to sugar and doesn't really supply you with the nutrients you need. I enjoy brown rice and wheat bread anyways, so it's kind of a plus. But try to eat less of the carbs and more veggies. Sugars like maple syrup, jelly, chocolate, ice cream, and even things like tomatoes and carrots that you wouldn't guess had sugar in them can really effect your steady moods as well as your sugar levels. Basically, meals consisting of a chicken salad, or a meat item with veggies and maybe a touch of starches or carbs is the healthiest simplest way to eat. No more than a tablespoon or two of starches or carbs is a good side dish to eat, just don't overdo it. It's a bit like the south beach diet. I notice when I eat pasta, I crash and feel heavy within an hour or two. Pizza is completely out of the question - it's like asking for a punch in the stomach, it goes nowhere for you.
Hope this helps.
