Q: Anxiety Attacks And Wpw

Hi,

as you may have seen on a previous post I have wpw syndrome. However recently I have started getting regular anxiety attacks, the first putting me in hospital. After it happened a few more times I went to see my gp to see what could be done. She told me that normally I would be prescribed anti-depressants, but as i'm taking flecainide for the wpw (until I have an ablaition in january) I can't take anything for the anxiety attacks. She's now referred me to a counsellor to see why I get them, and hopefully sort it that way. That's all well and good, but that's not going to help straight away, and i'm on an eight week waiting list. I was just wondering if anyone knows about anything I can do while i'm having one to lessen/stop it as they usually take a while and leave me completely drained of energy after wards, meaning i've had to be sent home from work a few times. This just isn't practical. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

i too have had wpw and also experience occasional fluters since catheter ablation although i thankfully do not get full blown palpitations anymore. i have noticed being a more anxious person and since having experienced som euncomfortab;e heart situations (one hospital stay like you mentioned above) i have come to realse its mainly in my hands and i can control it if i really put my mind to it. I find i have to get my head out of a panicky head space. I drink chamomile tea and try simple meditation techniques. i try to remain positive and remind myself to stop being silly and get with the moment. It all sounds like hippy stuff but it does actually work. Listen to your body and try to relax. Its easier said than done but you need to make time for yourself as this can be really depressing and that isnt healthy either. it's also an emotional rollercoaster deeling like we are throug the worst but still feeling on eh edge or fragile. Make sure you fuel your body with healthy food and drinks to maintain energy for your body to run sufficiently and again, chill your head out before the adrenaline gets the better of you. YOU CAN CONTROL IT!!! so please let yourself!! Smile) i wish you all the best and hope this offers some comfort to know that it can get easier. Good luck!

wpw + ablation = anxiety
I too have been experiencing the most awful anxiety since my ablation for wpw 10 months ago. Its nice to know that i'm not the only 1. After the ablation I found myself in the hospital via ambulance twice, convinced the procedure hadn't worked. In retrospect, I realize these were just anxiety attacks, which have been frequenting my life ever since. My dr. gave me Xanax .25mg which works great (as needed basis). I was (still do) getting chest pain, numbness, lightheaded, short of breath, nauseous etc during my attacks. Was afraid of meds, but after i convinced myself to take 1 and all of the symptoms went away, i realized it was just panic/anxiety & can't hurt me. I DO however have an appt w/ a Psychiatrist on Nov 30. I want to find out how to controll the anxiety w/out meds. I would love to discuss more in detail if anyone is interested....

@hourbyhour: same here been to the hospital a couple of times...every time had an ecg done which came out to be normal...they gave me some anti-anxiety meds...they have told me to take them, but i am afraid that i may get addicted to them..it was really tough to get out of my last addiction then got hung on the beta blockers...pls do share what your psychiatrist suggests, also have you been having occasional throbbing in your limb muscles??
