Q: Mechanism Proposed For Link Between Ru-486 And Fatal Infecti

The abortion drug mifepristone (mifeprex,tm ru-486) has been linked to rare cases of fatal bacterial infections, but until now the connection has not been clearly understood. In "pathophysiology of mifepristone-induced septic shock due to clostridium sordellii," author and brown university professor ralph p. Miech, md, phd, proposes two models of how this devastating reaction may occur. The article appears in the annals of pharmacotherapy online and in the journal's upcoming september print issue.

During an abortion, mifepristone works by blocking the effects of progesterone, shutting off nutrition to the placenta and fetus. However, miech points out, the antiprogesterone effects of mifepristone also cause changes in the cervix that allow c. Sordellii, a common vaginal bacteria, to enter the cervical canal. C. Sordellii thrives in this low-oxygen environment and derives nutrition from the decaying fetal tissue. Meanwhile, other hormonal effects of mifepristone, known as antiglucocorticoid actions, are taking place throughout the body. Through two models proposed by miech, these antiglucocorticoid effects may interfere with chemical regulators known as cytokines, offsetting the delicate balance between over- and under-activation of the immune system. This disruption impairs the body's ability to fight off c. Sordellii and may help spread the bacteria's toxic by-products, a combination that sometimes results in widespread septic shock.

At least 5 women in the us and canada have died from septic shock after taking mifepristone. C. Sordellii has been linked to 3 of those cases, while the bacteria remains unidentified in the others. C. Sordellii infections are rare outside of mifepristone use and have proven particularly dangerous because they often lack the usual warning signs, such as fever and tenderness on examination.
In 2004, the labeling of mifepristone was amended to include a black box warning about bacterial infections, sepsis, and death that may occur after use. A citizen petition for withdrawal of mifepristone from the us market has been submitted to the fda. It cites numerous safety concerns as well as procedural violations that occurred during the drug's approval process.

Apparently you don't care about the women who have died from this. There have been many drugs pulled off of the market because they are unsafe..But since this one helps people kill (oops..I mean have a choice) it should stay no matter what the consequences?

So it's apparent that you don't give a shi* about the people that have died from taking this. You are not pro-choice this proves that you are pro-abortion.

What is your point, paganangel? Are you saying that ru486 should be taken off the market because in *rare* cases, it's caused a woman to die? If that is the case, then most drugs should be off the market. Heck, viagra causes more deaths but I don't see anyone calling for it to be banned. Of course not - men have to have the almighty orgasm. [/sarcasm]

when it's proven that the risks can outweigh the benifits the medication needs to be removed from the market. Just like they did with vioxx. I honestly don't care what medication it is.

All medications have side effects, I knew a lady that passed on with aspirin poisining and there are still a lot that are unable to take aspirin, just like any other medication. I really hope you have to work in the real world one of these days, like a nurse, research or social services, then you might see and understand things a lot differently, maybe go to war even, I have been thru all of that and maybe you might be able to unerstand reality, the real world. Yes, I am pro-choice and I do care very very much but you seem to have a listening problem. You are negative and you would rather talk someone down instead of trying to understaand and help someone because of lack of knowing how and inexperience.

i'm sorry that you think you know so much about me dear. But as a matter of fact I do happen to work in the real world. Honestly i'm tired of hearing about your "life" experience and how we are all dillusional. You do not know me and please don't act like you do. As for my listening it's quiet fine but thanks for the concern.

Paganangel, back it up again. I never said, I do know you and that I want to know you, I am just stating facts and it is too bad you cannot handle the truth and facts. I never said you were dillusional either. As I said before and I will say it again, I would like to see this place get pulled back together like it used to be before it is shut down. Their are too many people that want this place shut down so that they can re-start their places. This place was good and yet kind of a fun place at one time
believe it or not and I am not a bad person and I am sure that you are not either, so I can just ignore you, just like I do some of the others here and you can ignore me and we can both move on.
Good luck to you and yours, but I am sorry for your bitterness and your mis-understanding.
