Iuds are not recommended for women who have never carried a pregnancy to term. Iuds also have the added risk of infertility, which is a risk i, personally, would never be willing to take as I hope to (one day) have a family. However, if you've already had all the children you plan on having, an iud may not be a bad choice.

I recently decided to get an iud. It is one of the most effective reversible types of birth control on the market and is quite convenient for those of us who forget to take the pill (got pregnant while on the pill). However, like any other type of birth control there are risks and side effects such as a heavy menstral period and cramping. Users are also at a higher risk of developing pid. Your health care professional will most likely give u some information on iud's, ask u some questions about ur health history, and help u determine if that is a good option for you. Also, doctors strongly suggest that you be in a monogamous relationship and remember iud's do not prevent stds. Hope this helps..

An iud is an excellent form of birth control...It's practically goof-proof. Anyone can get an iud whether or not you've had children...In general it's easier to insert on someone who has had at least one child b/c the cervix is easier to get thru. As far as casuing infertility, your chances of that are about the same as being on the pill. There are two kinds of iud's - the mirena which is plastic & contains a low dose of hormones, and the paragard which is copper and doesn't contain any hormones. Generally, the mirena is a better choice b/c it has a lower risk of giving you long, heavy periods like the paragard does. Ususally after 6 mo on the mirena you probably will only have some spotting or a period that lasts for a day. The good thing about this is that it's reversable. So as soon as you decide you may want to get pregnant, just have it removed and you should be able to get pregnant soon after just like the pill. I know there is a website for the mirena, but not sure about the paragard...Your doctor should have brochures for you to read. Hope this is of some help!!
