Water Allergy
Posted: 08-02-05 16:43pm

A friend of mine seems to have an allergy to water. After taking a shower or a bath his chest, back, front side of thighs and external side or arms start itching like crazy. It is so bad that he can't help himself from scratching. There is no eczema...Just the itching which lasts for about 2 hours. Nothing seems to help, not even calm the itching; he's tryed menthol cream and alcohol , as well as allergy creams. He is ok with rain water or swimming pool water. And one time from 10 his skin doesn't itch after shower.

Maybe someone has this problem, or had it...My friend will go to the allergist next week but meanwhile, he would appreciate any idea. Thanks.

Sounds like he may be allergic to some mineral or ingredient in the water. He should think about getting a water purifier for his house or now you can buy shower heads with filters in them. It could be something naturally in the water or something introduced into it.

Is your friend taking hot showers? Cause I have cholinergic urticaria and whenever I take hot showers, I start itching like crazy. Or maybe it's something he's using that makes him allergic like shampoo or soap.

No, he is not taking hot showers...He doesn't like hot water. As for the products he is uses...His skin itches no matter what type of shampoo or soap, etc. He is using....His skin itches even if he doesn't use anything, just if he just gets wet...

Possibly chlorine or flouride, my daughter istches too and her skin dries out so much it feels like her skin is stretching. We dontt know why or what from. So if he does find out what it is please post maybe it will help her.

Tell your friend good luck

i thought about that too but if so, why isn't he allergic to pool water?...I don't understand. Has your daughter done any skin tests to see if the substance she is allergic to can be identified? I believe this is the only way to find out. Unfortunately my friend hasn't been to a doctor so far.

Anyway, if he finds out what he is allergic to, I will let you know. And thank you.

Maybe it has something to do with the source of water... Does his water come from a well or from the city?

My friend lives in the city, so the water is ok...I have no idea what the problem may be...

Maybe...

Maybe it is just hard water-- which does cause the skin to dry up or itch.

Even city water has multiple things in it.. The processes they put it through do not eliminate all minerals or chemicals. I agree that if it was the chlorine, he'd have a problem with pool water as well.

well, no one seems to know that unfortunately. I even thought this could be a psychic problem, but I don't know. I hoped somebody could tell me what the problem is...

Algae?
Posted: 09-24-05 17:55pm

My daughter has the same problem. Inflamed itchy skin after baths and playing with the water. Rain and pool water okay. When we go on vacation, she is fine. I suspect that it is the algae. We use well water but I think the the biggest problem is our pipes. She is extremely phenol sensitive. She needs to stay away from pollen, mildew, herbal anything and many fruits.

The allergist should ask about other problems. That should help narrow it down. Please let us know what you find out about your friends allergy.

As all you people are on here because you have or know someone who has an unusual reaction to water after having a shower or bath I decided to write in to tell you that I have 14 family members who suffer from the same condition.

It doesn't matter what kind of water or what's in it (because even a shower head with a filter in it doesn't work) and it seems if the water is warmer than luke-warm it increases the itching (as well as any kind of perfumed soaps and even some moisturizers).

If you're looking for a name...I'd check into a condition called aquagenic pruritus. It's what everyone in my family has. Here's a web site address that not only discusses the symptoms and causes but also why your body reacts like it does, it's a great site. If what it describes isn't exactally what you're looking for i'd try looking at pruritus in general and you'll probably find it.

Hope this helps :p

Water Allergy-chlorinated Water
Posted: 11-09-05 12:58pm

Chlorinated water is the main cause for water allergies and eczema. I have been using shower filters for over 7 years. At first I was skeptical that it would make a difference but it really has and I don't need lotions or creams any more. This next article is copied and pasted from http://www.Ultimatewaterfilte r.Com

although you may be aware of the contaminants in drinking water these days, have you ever stopped to consider that the same pollutants are in your shower and bathing water? Would it surprise you to learn that your body actually absorbs more chemical contaminants like chlorine during a quick shower than all the water you will drink during the day?

Our skin being the largest organ on our body will absorb anything we put on it. Lotions, perfumes, creams and even contaminants in shower water quickly move into the blood stream as they by pass the liver, actually they absorb much more quickly than if we are ingesting them orally.

If you are concerned about drinking chlorinated water and the high cancer risks associated with it than consider this..... Two-thirds of the harmful chlorine exposure actually comes from showering.

A 15 minute hot steamy shower is equivalent to drinking 8 glasses of water because of the vapors inhaled. The epa states that "due to chlorine and showering virtually every home in america has a detectable level of chloroform in the air." this is because chlorine vaporizes in steam and combines with other organic compounds into chloroform which is a strong respiratory irritant and causes fatigue. A warm shower opens pores and allows a high rate of absorption. During a shower, 98% of the water goes down the drain, while 70-90% of the chemicals vaporize before the water hits the ground and the vapors remain in the air.

Bathing in chlorinated water also strips the natural protective oils in the skin and hair causing scaling and itching and is a major irritant for skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. It kills the beneficial bacteria on the surface of the skin that offer a natural defense against skin disorders. So if you or a loved one suffers from a skin disorder, the most important step you can take is to eliminate the greatest irritant which is chlorine by investing in a quality shower filter. You will also love how soft and less dry your hair and skin is.

P.S.

Even if I wasn't bothered by skin allergies related to chlorinated water, I would still use a shower filter as none of those chemicals can possible be beneficial to us.

Water Urticaria
Posted: 11-18-05 23:25pm

I've been having the same problem, any time I spend over 5-10 minutes in water i'm covered from my face down! The itching is horrible. I feel very bad for your friend, because I know what it's like. If you think it nessecary, you should look into water urticaria, it's the same symptoms and and many of the websites have remedies, or treatments that help, the only thing that works on mine is a prescription lotion. I hope it doesn't get that far. Good luck
