Q: Back Pain And Related Pain When Swallowing?

Ok, I woke up yesterday morning with a very sore neck and pain between my shoulder blades. It hurt to look up, down, left or right and my neck range of motion was very limited. But what worried me the most was that when I swallowed whole food, I got a pain as the food passed where the pain was. My throat wasn't hurting, just a quick jolt of pain as I swallowed, right between my shoulder blades. Today, that pain is a lot less and my range of motion is way better. My neck still hurts when I look up. But that pain when swallowed food is still there. I have no pain when drinking, just swallowing.

Any help, suggestions, links, etc. Would be appreciated. Hate to go to the doctor sounding like a crybaby for back pain but it seems odd to have it associated with swallowing.

Back pain when I swallow
I have had that same pain over the last couple of days and believe that it was my Chiropractor who caused it. She sometimes rubs to hard and goes across muscles instead of along them etc. I hadnt been to the Chiro in a while and went on Friday and Monday and am having real bad pain between my shoulder blades when swallowing. Were either of you been seeing a Chiropractor when this began happing?

back pain and swallowing
Skip the Chiros, DO's, etc and go straight to a Neurologist not a neurosurgeon.
You need a diagnosis before you get treatment. I also wouldn't let a Chiropractor treat your neck, a Chiropractor herniated the discs in my husbands necks and caused him eight years of pain before he had surgery. Low back is different, but neck adjustments shouldn't be done. His Neurologist told him that most of his Chir patients are cervical disc herniations or stroke patients. He said my husband was lucky to have the disc issues.

Cervical disc problems can cause problems with swallowing, including pain when swallowing solid foods and it can cause shoulder blade pain as well.

Some of the symptoms can be caused by a virus or bacterial infection.

First thing you need to do, both of you is see your regular doctor to rule out any possible viral or bacterial infection. If that isn't the case, then you need to see a spine surgeon, either an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spines or a neurosurgeon that specializes in spines and get an evaluation as to what is going on.

In the mean time, I agree 100%, stay away from chiropractors and DO's, especially when dealing with a cervical problem of any kind.

Many, many stories in the news, and newspapers on how chiropractors have created havoc with a patients spine, herniated discs that where not herniated before hand, snapped necks and paralyzed patients as well as cause strokes.

Good luck and see your regular doctor first.

I have the same pain
Mine began in Sept. of 2008. Felt pain in my left scapula as I swallowed whole food particles. Thought maybe I had slept wrong and blew it off for a few days. Days turned into 3 weeks and I began to worry about this. I ended up seeing a Dr. at Urgent Care who wanted a Chest X-ray and then EKG which came back normal. She suggested I see a GI specialist about the swallowing pain in the upper back. I ended up having a barium swallow that showed nothing.

Ironically with all this, my upper trap/neck area is killing me and hurts more when I bend my head down and to the right. It feels very achy and extends down into shoulder blade. I have fair range of motion when turning my head, but every morning when I wake up that same area hurts real bad. This all began with a popping/snapping noise of my neck, which happened a good 10 times in the last 4 months. I still have the pain in my scapula area when swallowing food (with every bite/swallow). I have seen 3 different Drs. 2 different chiro's, 3 different massage therpists and now in physical therapy which is not helping. I have been on anti-inflams', oral steroids, painkillers and those dont' help either. I am so frustrated and worried about this pain. I am now going back to see GI specialist. The pain in my back when swallowing is worrying me so much that I want an endoscopy to rule out esophagus problems even though my Barium Swallow was negative.

Do any of you think this sounds like a herniated cervical disk? I have pain all the time in that area (from bottom of left scapula up into neck region) not just with a swallow.
Thanks!JB
