No hype about Libido Increase
ccarlson
replied February 22nd, 2011
My wife has been on Bupropion 200mg for a while since Sept 2010. We had a great (well starting to become great) sex life before she started on bupropion. I can assure you she is not jumping me when she sees me. Sex is back to what it used to be years ago in our marriage - a chore for her or something she has to do because we are married. I don't know where these women are coming up with these stories about their sex drive being off the chart and "can't get enough sex". It all sounds like some kind of hype and I am not buying it.

To CCarlson:
This is not hype. I already had a great libido before taking Wellbutrin XL. After being on it for a month I went for a check-up with my Dr. I told him about my Increased libido. He informed me that it only happens to 10% of the female patients and I must be in the lucky 10%. I told him I didn't need any help in that department. In which he told me...well just enjoy it for the next couple of months because once your body aclimates to the medicine it will level off. He was right on all accounts.
So what you are seeing here..since this is a forum for Increased sex drive...is the lucky 10% of the women he was referring to.
So trust me...this isn't hype.
Maybe your wife's depression increased her testosterone hormone which in turn increased her sex-drive...and once serotonin was increaed from the Wellbutrin it leveled off her testosterone. Just a guest ... but there's has to be other underlying causes because I can attest no one is hyping it, as it does increase your sex-drive in a few percentage of people.

To NoHypeHoney:

You say it increases libido in a few percentage? If that is the case then why are all postings talking about an increase. By statistical averages this is a definitive sampling of the population which should show a percentage on both sides but it is 100% about increasing libido. Total hype. There has to be someone that did not experience any increase at all. My wife's libido has drastically decreased. Total hype.

Totally agree...I smell a rat. Also why is it all women spouting on about this wonder drug?? Where are the men boasting about hard erections, increased libido, increased penile sensitivity? I took this drug and apart from causing constipation it did absolutely nothing. I have suffered with chronic depression, back pain, erectile dysfunction for 15 years and it is cruel to post these lies!

This is crazy!! I started taking Welbutrin about a month ago, last week I started to get a crazy sex drive. It is driving me crazy, I dont mind it but this is just to much! I am also taking Zoloft which decreases sex drive, so it's weird I want sex alll day and when I get it I cant orgasm. If this goes on any much longer I am definently going to call my Dr. this is just out of control. LOL I have been trying to figure out why this sudden change, I didn't know what the hell was going on. Then I thought maybe it's the medication and found all these comments and started laughing. Does anyone know if this will go away?

My wife takes zoloft and 400mg of Welbutrin and sex has diminished. This is all hype. You want sex all day? REALLY?? Total BS!!!!

Zoloft is the problem, not Wellbutrin. And while Wellbutrin is sometimes used in an attempt to combat the prominent sexual side effects of SSRI's (like Zoloft), it frequently does not work. If your wife can stop the Zoloft, her sex drive would probably return to normal. However, if she's taking the Zoloft for anxiety, her doctor might want to give her something else for this. As long as it's not another SSRI (Prozac, Paxil, Celexa, Lexapro, Luvox) or an SNRI (Cymbalta, Effexor, Pristiq) she should be OK.

There is antidepressant aside from Wellbutrin that tends to not cause negative sexual side effects: Remeron. Two downsides to Remeron - it tends to be sedating and causes increased appetite and weight gain. However, if your wife suffers from insomnia and is underweight these can be good side effects. If she's not underweight, the weight gain can be controlled via diet.

BTW, the Wellbutrin/libido connection is not "total hype"...http://www.salon.com/sex/feature/2 000/09/26/wellbutrin

That doesn't mean it will work for everyone though.

To all in this forum and those just getting here: What I have read is all hype. I did a study of the verbage used and found that the same verbage is used over and over again plus the fact that some usernames such as "Nohypehoney" just reak with commercialist hype. Below is a quote I found from a more reliable blog and there are many more I can find as well:

"Wellbutrin definitely lowered my sex drive, but worse than that, sex just sucked when I did have it.
It's relatively uncommon to have sexual side effects at all on wellbutrin, but since it does mess with those neurotransmitters and hormones and junk, there's always a possibility of something changing."

With that said, I can tell you that anyone with a decreased libido or no desire for sex can take sex or leave it. They don't seek out sex or any increase thereof (except in few rare instances). If I have no desire in something why would I try to increase that desire to seek it out???? Welbutrin and Bupropion both work well for depression and BP but for sex drive increases there is no substantiating proof.

That's it??? No one wants to challenge me on the hype about Welbutrim or Bupropion increasing libido??? I guess I was right and kept people looking for the right answers from being misled by hypsters. When your user name is "Nohypehoney" or "Amazed" or if the username has some commercialism about the product you can rest assured it is hype and a fake user name.

Not hype, I work in healthcare and this is real.
Sorry, if people think this is hype, but I just left work because of a extremely distractive sex drive. I am dedicated to my work and family and have never done anything like that. My husband and I have been enjoying my hyper sex drive for over 9 months. I have also had increased energy. I got concerned when I had to leave work today. My husband has had to travel for work so he has been away this week. My pent up sex drive was driving me crazy, I went home to masturbate. Masturbation was a couple hours with multiple orgasms. I prefer having sex with my husband it is more enjoyable for me. I like to new hyper sex drive, it works well for treatment of depression. I thought that Welbutrin decreased sex drive but Webutrin XL brand ( my doctor insist that I use the brand name ) seems to have caused this new phenominon. My sex drive is totatlly off the charts. I have even had sex over the phone with my husband when he has been away and there wasn't such a big time differance. This trip has caused a definate problem. He has ordered some sex toys, but that is not my cup of tea. I can't wait until he is home. In the meantime, I guess masturbation is the only cure. I like this side effect because it makes me feel good, helps my sexual relationship with my husband and I have had the most fantastic orgasms ever. This is not hype. It is a side effect of the medication. I hope I never have to leave work again, I don't want it to interfer with my job. I am going to use it every other until my husband is back. Balance is important to me.

Totally not hype, increased sex drive is real!
I can assure you that I am your average depressed housewife, simply perusing the internet to verify I am not crazy. Since the addition of wellbutrin (about a month ago) to the celexa I was already taking, it's been a complete 180. I found it increasingly difficult to achieve orgasms as I had been able to previously. My own research and a strong recommendation from my mother led me to inquire about wellbutrin and my doctor said we can give it a try. She warned me it's a little crazy at first. I brushed aside her comment about not starting it for a couple of days if I had anything important to do, but learned the truth of her statement when I missed a couple large assignments in my college classes merely because I completely lost track of time and decided to clean and organize my craft room that I haven't set foot in for months. To the person that felt off with the effexor and almost cheated, I got a warning of similar side effects from my doctor as well. She said that I may be less inhibited while on it and there have been issues that arise because people go off and have affairs that normally wouldn't even consider something like that because of said lowered inhibitions. (I was instructed to call her if I experienced any extreme behaviors like that.) Now in my fourth week, I have discovered my sex drive again and my poor husband is having some trouble adjusting. "But we've had sex every other week or two for like 4 years, and now you want it every other day or two? I didn't sign up for this!" Frankly, I didn't either, but I'm not arguing. I'm less tired and I actually get up and do things every day. I'm going to work on channeling the excess energy into other outlets like exercise maybe and see if I can see some of the weight loss action soon!

Is this true? HIGH SEX DRIVE?????
Hi,
I have to say I am totally blown away with all these comments. I have not filled my prescription yet, because of fear of side effects,I am currently taking Suboxone, and wanted to ween off. I have been on it for five years for pain killer addiction and then realized it helped with my depression, so I stayed on it. My husband has been pressuring me to get off and I think it's time too. But I was afraid of depression coming back. So my doc prescribed WB to help me ween off easily. I am SO excited to hear about the increased sex drive. Sub made me loose mine and like some on here, was having sex just to please my husband. I KNOW he will LOVE for me to be the one to want it first and more!!!! Has anyone taken it while suboxone ? I REALLY hope this is NOT hype, as the other poster stated on here. I pray this will help me get off Suboxone and Help with depression, lack of energy and of course my sex life!!!! Did anyone feel TOO jittery being on it? How about sleeplessness ?

CCarlson....
After reading CCarlson's comments I felt I should respond.

First of all, who are you to make that sort of declaration? Medications and people's responses to them are highly individualized. Even if 90% of users experienced an increase in libido, it wouldn't be inconceivable that your wife may not.

Additionally, I noticed you mentioned that she is taking Bupropion, which is the generic name for Wellbutrin. If this is the case, that may be the reason why. You ought to do some research into the profound differences between Wellbutrin and its "generic equivalent". Having seen your attitude above, I know your argument already. "But a generic is supposed to be identical to the original drug!" Wrong, they aren't.

The filler ingredients in the generic version of Wellbutrin are different. Filler ingredients being binders, dyes, etc. In some cases this can even result in an entirely different side effect profile. More importantly, the RELEASE MECHANISMS in the generic version ARE NOT THE SAME to the brand name version. The payload is delivered at a different rate. Furthermore, did you know the FDA only requires there to be a 20% bioequivalence in the active ingredient between brand name drugs and their generic counterparts? Yea... pretty lax standard if you ask me.

That $4 generic you're getting at WalMart, for all intents and purposes, could have an entirely different effect on your wife than the brand name version.

You ought to spend a little time educating yourself before you come on here and start dismissing people's testimonials like you have. If in fact I am incorrect and your wife IS taking the brand name, my point remains. We all experience different effects from drugs and I think because you so desperately want your wife's sex drive to be in proportion to your own, you're giving short shrift to other people's experiences because you are disappointed with your wife's results.

I have taken both the brand name and generic and had totally opposite reactions. In fact, many doctors are protesting these generics...refusing to prescribe them because of their poor efficacy.

Anyway man, I have no agenda here other than to help enlighten you. You have a crummy attitude and might benefit from a little Wellbutrin yourself.

I agree with your assessment of ccalson's attitude, but your info about generics is incorrect. Generic Wellbutrin (or generic anything for that matter) has to contain the same dose of the active drug and the time-release mechanism has to work in the same manner. Yes, generics can use different fillers, but the drug effect is the same. If you or anyone you know is taking the name brand of any drug (and thus paying considerably more for it) then you (or they) should save money and switch to the generic. If you notice any difference between a name brand drug and its generic equivalent then you're experiencing the placebo effect.

increased libdo with wellbutrion
I've been taking the gernic for 2 years. It does make my sex drive MUCH higher. To that point I first noticed the increase in sex about a month after starting 150mg 2XDay. The iincrease in sexual thoughts are very distracting @ times. I tend to have sex on my mind most of the time and spend a lot of time searching the internet for porn. I never dreamed it would make me have this much of a hieghtened libdo but it is somewhat overwhelming. I don't sleep aome nghts cause I need sex. I frequently stay a wake and masturbate after husband aslept. He says he only wants sex once a week. Before WB we had sex once or twiice every other week. We are midlife, i'm age 49. He's 51 and need viagra due to BP MEDS before we can have sex, so this makes it impossible to be spontaneus. Now that I have experinced the high libdo I feel and think differently about sex and my body. I want him to want me more cause I have a hard time asking for sex. I use masturbation to try and satisfy my libdo. Everytime I feel this high my mind and body needs for him to have sex with me. Gets hard on our marriage @ times cause I get upset with him if he rejects my advances. I have threaten to leave him a few times when he did satisfy me on request. WB HAS IS PROS & CONS. I'm not willing to give up on my marriage or give up my sex drive yet both have crossed my mind.

Increased sex drive with Wellbutrin
Oh, it's real all right! I'm a middle-aged female and have only been on Wellbutrin (2 100 mg per day) for three days and this morning I woke up as horney as ever! What a relief after the long 'dry' spell that accompanied my depression for the last year. My BF's out of town, so I'm taking the situation into my own hands...LOL!! Best side effect ever!!!

I can attest to the sexual side effects. My wife took Wellbutrin XL for depression and even after two years her sex drive was off the charts. I wasn't able to keep up so I had to resort to many hours of "alternative" oral therapy nearly every day. (neither of us minded that a bit)

Unfortunately she passed away two years ago, but anyone who says this isn't a real side effect needs to study it a bit more. I doubt the 10% number is correct.

I was on Zoloft for almost two years for depression and anxiety. At first I loved it until I realized it had flattened my moods completely (both good and bad). I was incapable of feeling any kind of passion anymore (whether it was for something I loved doing, like writing/painting, or having sex). I'm now engaged to be married in just several months, I'm 22 years old, and have zero sex drive! A few weeks ago I went to my doctor and she put me on Bupropion XL. For about a week, when I was in the process of getting on BP and off Zoloft, I was horny for the first time in years and loving it! But now I feel like I'm back to normal and, to make matters worse, I don't feel like BP is helping with the depression. I want to give it more time, especially after reading all of this, but I'm so scared that it won't ever change. I don't want to not enjoy sex on my wedding night or honeymoon. Should I ask her about Wellbutrin instead? Is there something else I can try? Should I try a WB and Zoloft combo? Someone please help me! I feel so incomplete.

Bupropion is the generic version of Wellbutrin. They contain the same active ingredient (bupropion). Switching to the name brand will not help. Talk to your Dr. to see if she/he has any suggestions.

It usually takes 2 to 6 weeks before the antidepressant effect kicks in. Same for the libido improvement. Give it more time and don't be so hard on yourself. There's no need to feel incomplete - depression is a physical illness and its symptoms can be treated successfully with bupropion and other antidepressants. Another huge help with depression is therapy. Find a good psychologist - check the internet; you can usually find ratings for therapists online.

Good luck and congrats!

Generic....
I originally took Bupropion about 5 years ago to help me quit smoking. Within days I wasn't even thinking about cigarettes, then the horrible side affects kicked in. First an ache in my shoulder the became so severe I could not move my arm. Then my fingers began the same pain, so severe that they literally felt like they were broken. The pain was followed up in my knees & feet. So bad I couldn't even walk & spent the entire birthday party I spent months planning for a loved one (thrown by ME) laying on the couch. I started out w/ hives but have gotten hives so many times in my life (never to a med though), that I didn't even connect the dots. Eventually after days of this pain to the point where I would just sit there & cry, somebody suggested it was the Bupropion & I went off it & the pain stopped.
Fast forward about 4 years. I had a one year old son & quit smoking while I was pregnant only to start again when he was a few months old. I was desperate to quit again so I decided to give Bupropion another shot. Started working ok with the smoking, not as well as before, but my sex drive slowly started increasing. Nothing like what these people are stating, but for somebody who has a pretty low sex drive for years, it was great to even want it! Then the hives came back & I went off it again.
A few months later I did some research & saw some people were having a reaction to the generic & not the name brand. So my doctor prescribed a lower dose of the brand (just in case of a reaction) & low & behold, no allergic reaction! & just my luck, I kept forgetting to take the pills & threw them out on accident!
So now I am on my 4th round with this stuff. Taking the name brand. No allergy so far knock on wood, but horrible insomnia. The cool thing is after only getting 3-4 hours of sleep, when I take my morning dose, it wakes me right up. & pretty frequent urination. But that's it. Would LOVE the sex drive to kick in, but I notice most people are getting that with the XL & I'm taking the SR. Anybody know the difference?
So bottom line is, something is different in the generic & the brand. Even if it is just a dye or whatnot, my body reacted differently to the generic.

This is my second go-round with Wellbutrin. The first was in 2002 and I'm currently taking it now (been on it about 5 weeks).

Both times, after about a month, I noticed an uptick in my sex drive. Not as intense as many of the posters describe, but an increase nonetheless.

I have been taking 150 mg of wellbutrin daily for about a year and just realized that my new found love for sex may be a side effect of the drug. I'm 52 and had a big depression since leaving my husband of 24 years two years ago. I've been feeling like a teenager again! All I think of is sex and how to get it. Not so easy sans hubby. I have to have a minimum of one orgasm a day and its pretty boring alone. Am looking for a FWB as I think that is the only answer for now. Not a bad problem to have. I'm NOT complaining.....

Welbutrin 300mg = intense libido, oh yeah!!
After reading all these posts I feel so much better! I wasn't sure if this medication was the cause for my unending appetite for sex but now I know for sure. I started Welbutring 150mg a day for depression and after 4 months my dose was increased to 300mg. WOW what a difference it has made. All day I think about sex, I just can't stop. I toss and turn at nite until my hubby gives me "some". I am like Niagara Falls, that's how wet I am all day everyday. Oh but it feels so good, I am currently seeing a marriage therapist and I told my husband that no matter what happens, he MUST take care of my sexual needs. Give me some sugar and then you can go back to being mad if you want!!! Oh and even afterwards-a quick nap and i'm ready to go at it again. Who knew that curing depression would be so fun, oh and I lost weight too, I simply am not hungry. Welbutrin is a freaking miracle I tell you, a freaking miracle!!

sex drive and Wellbutrin
I have been on Wellbutrin for 10 months, and experienced an initial weightloss and it absolutely took the depression away. Everything is easier to manage now. The increased sex drive is problematic. I always had a high sex drive, but now it almost interferes with my life. I am a 42 year old, married woman who now looks at porn (this is new), masturbates every day, sometimes on a bad day, as many as 5 times. I am in a poor marriage and have been unfaithful to my husband with several men in the last few months. This is so crazy! I have now settled into a sexual thing with one man, and the sex is out of this world, but I have 3 children and worry that ultimately my huge increase in sex drive is going to end my marriage. I actually tried to go off the medicine due to this side effect, but slid back into depression. So, it seems I am either going to be happy and horny, or depressed.

How long for libido improvement?
How long and at what dosage did users see results in libido and sex drive?
I am on 300mg Generic SR, 150 2x a day. One month at 150mg and now about 2 weeks at 300.
Nothing so far, if only a *reduced* tendency to look at porn.
I'm a 42 yr old male with high testosterone (exogenous) and low sex drive.
