Ok so I have a question. For the past while I have been really worried because I have had a really bad sore throat. But then the pain went away and now a different pain is here. Its sbeen here for roughly 2 and a half days, today I looked in the mirror and saw that I had canker sores about 3 of them on my throat like at the back!!! Has anyone ever had this happen to them? How do these get started? I am on accutane right now, could this be a reason as to why I am getting these?? And also is there anyway I could get rid of the pain somewhat. They really hurt bad!! Any replys would be appriciated thx.

I Have the Same Thing
Tyler, how did it turn out? Did they get better? I have the exact same thing now. I have mono, and last week had strep along with it. The strep cleared up and I felt a little better for a while, but then the cankers started. I do get them in my mouth from time to time whenever I get a cut or scrape there, but have never had them on my throat before. It is very painful. I would love to hear what you did treat them, or how long it took to clear up. You don't happen to have mono do you?

Hope you are feeling better!

Yes it finally cleared up thx for asking. It went away after 2 weeks of pain and crap. It messed alot of my summer up. But its all good. So if you have the same thing it will pass dont worry. For a while there I swear I thought I was dieing. If I didnt take advil atleast once every 6 hours my throat was killing. But eventually it went away. The best thing to do is drink alot of water and always always always have some gum in your mouth to keep it moist.

Hi Paintchick,

Were you always allergic to chocolate? How did you discover the chocolate caused this?

Is it painful at all times, or only when you swallow?

I have the exact same thing. I got diagnosed with strep last monday. By Wednesday I started to feel better and on Thursday the new pain began. I noticed the canker sores forming Thursday night. They formed on my Uvula, back of mouth, and all down my throat. It is now the following Monday and the sores seemed to have maxed out. This is the most painful sickness I have ever experienced. The doctors have me on antibiotics, anti-viral, and anti-fungal since they are positive which one may have caused this.

Since 2005, did you ever figure out what caused this? Did it ever return? Thank you for your posts. I thought I was the only one experiencing this since the doctors have never seen anything like it.

ok idk if this is wat you had but b careful!
my entire life i suffered from agonizingly painful sore throats w/ raw or pus covered sores. it turns out that after about 6 years of pain, i finally got my tonsils removed. it took so long partly because i had a quack doctor who 'didnt beleive in tonsillectomies'. anyways, i went to a specialist and he told me that i had an anaerobic infection caught in the folds of my throat. at that point it had gotten so bad that my throat swelled so much that i actually had a difficult time breathing. it was a scary experience as i missed many days of school in my elementary years and i am glad i got them removed before high school. but i will never forget: the doc told me that in about a month or two, my throat would have swelled even further and eventually burst. wen i went to see the doc there was one poor girl to whom this occurred and i have never seen anyone in so much pain. anyways, just watch out for that, but if it has already gone away and you dont have consistent sores you probably just got some sort of infection that caused them.

Canker Sores
I have had the same thing happen to me recently! One day I started to feel a sore throat coming on, and a few day later I saw a bad irritation in the back of my throat and some white bumps. I thought it was stress so I went in to a doctor and they said it was canker sores. Over the next few days I started to see the bumps not only in my throat but on my tongue also! The doctor gave me a prescription for an numbing oral rinse for the pain but said that there is nothing that we could do except wait it out. Well I did that and they went away...that was about two weeks ago...and yesterday I started feeling another sore throat...and today the canker sores are back and killing me! I don't know what to do now?! I think that I might go see a specialist, an ear-nose-and throat doctor to see if there is any probable causes.

Canker sores & herpes?
I've been told that canker sores are actually a different strain of herpies...same with chicken pox & shingles. So, why I ask, haven't they developed a pill similar to the herpes one?

My father actually takes valtrex (made for herpes) to control not only his cold sores but also his canker sores. He hasn't gotten either one since he started taking the medication. Ask your doctor to try it.

It isn't canker sores that are a different form of herpies, it is cold sores, the painful bumps you can get around your lips.

Chronic canker sores can be caused by herpes virus and are triggered by illness and stress. (Actually, you can get herpes in your eyes, too.) If they persist and are very bad (larger than the size of an eraser), you can get a prescription for Valtrex. I didn't like the prescription, but it works for some people. As far as preventing cankers goes, if you find they are chronic for you, try taking a vitamin called Lysene. That's helped me and several of my friends with our canker problems. For throat cankers, try a chloraseptic spray to try to cut the pain.

I too get canker sores in the back of my throat. I have been to the dr. and they are not a form of herpes (have had two different doctors test the affected areas). Canker sores are ulcers, similar to stomach ulcers that are often caused by too much acid. I found that mixing liquid benadryl and maalox is equal parts and rinsing my mouth (don't swallow) helps with the pain (like 4 times a day).

Mono
Well I can tell all of you right now that I am dealing with this problem as I type. They formed on my throat and with it cam incrdible amounts of pain. Swallowing and chewing anything hurts. I went to the doctor and he told me I have mono but the only thing he could do for my throat was numb it was a solution you gargle that tastes terrible. It's been a couple days now and now the sores have moved to my tongue and the roof of my mouth. I can't sleep and it's hard to breathe and drinking anything tastes like acid running down my throat. I've been out of school this whole week and plan to return monday, that is, if nothing worse happens. The most you can do is get plenty of rest, and wait it out.

I had this twice and went to a specialty dentist who used a laser to cauterize the sore. Pain went away instantly! Definately worth the 50 bucks it cost.

omg i have been researching this bc for the past wk i have had 5 sores at the back of my throat. At first i thought it was tonsilitis because i had a fever but then when i looked at it in the mirror i saw sores.. i went to the doctor and he gave me 6 valtrex to take 2 for 3 days.. so far it hasnt worked and i havent ate in a couple of days.. 2wks ago i weight 125 and today i weight 110. I cant even talk because it hurts so bad and i cant even swallow my own saliva, i spit it out. 3 days b4 the symptoms started my fiance and i decided to part ways so i figured that it was the emotional stress that caused these sores.. they suck!!!

I've got the same thing right now. A huge, painful canker sore on the back of my throat near my tonsils. I know exactly what causes mine - peanuts! I used to get sores all the time and it made life niserable, but I moved to the UK about 5 years and my peanut and peanut butter product intake drastically diminished. I stopped getting sores. Now every time I do get one, I can directly link it to a huge intake of peanuts or peanut butter products.

Canker sores in throat
I too have suffered from canker sores and canker sores in the back of the throat. I find that using Amosan (from Oral B) works well, it is sold in powder form and comes in packets of 30. It is basically a hydrogen peroxide rinse but better. Also taking a probiotic and lysene does help. Otherwise you have to tough it out. Take advil for the pain. Also as a preventative measure do not use toothpaste or mouth wash that contains Sodium Luaryl Sulfite. This is an oral irritant and many people are sensitive to it. Also having lived with canker sores my whole life every doctor has told me it is not caused by herpes; however i suspect there is some virus at work.

Z-Pak Side-Effect
For those who have taken antibiotics and then developed canker sores...If you were prescribed Z-Pak (Zithromax, Azithromycin) this can be a side-effect. I had an infection treated with Z-Pak and developed horrible canker sores on my tonsils and all over the throat area. I called the doctor who called me back and sure enough, a rare side-effect of Z-Pak are painful oral ulcerations. This went on for 2-3 days while taking the Z-Pak. After stopping the Z-Pak and without the use of any other antibiotic they cleared up within hours.

Cold Sores in my throat
I have suffered too with cold sores or canker sores (whichever you want to call them), in my throat all my life as well. I tried this tablespoon of baking soda and warm water mixture. It did help relieve the pain of swallowing right away. They are not gone but every single swallow isn't as painful. Thank you!

cold sores and canker sores are two TOTALLY DIFFERENT things. cold sores are herpes family and cankers are just from ph balance and allergies and irritation.

Does anyone know how far down in the throat a sore can exist? I went to the Dr. yesterday after a week of throat pain. No strep. He glanced in my mouth/throat and did not see anything unusual. After getting home I remembered I had had a sore on my tongue the same time as the throat problem started. The Dr. did not see anything on his glance and my wife has looked. I think a sore must be further doen than can be seen by glancing in.

Any Thoughts?

Mouth sores Z-pack
So glad to find this! I started my son on a Z-pack and the next morning he woke up with ulcers all over his tounge and back of throat. I took him back to the dr, and said "maybe this is a side effect of the medication?" no, he ensured me and just gave us another medication for a fungal infection and told me if that doesn't work, to call him in the morning... well now my poor son's mouth is completly covered with sores! His tounge, gums, throat, inside sides of cheeks... he drools and is in massive pain. Ahhhgghhh! I'm not giving him anymore medicine- PERIOD.

Sorry -Seeing this years after the fact, but I would have said: Don't go back to that doctor!

Did she even do a swab for strep culture? Or ask you some personal questions? Anyone who tosses around prescriptions for antibiotics for something like this is medically irresponsible and is helping create superviruses (like MRSA and CRE) that are resistant to everything but an atom bomb and will eventually kill us all.

Hope you're feeling better by now...

And I hope you told that doctor she needs to get a clue.
