Q: Wisdom Teeth Questions:

I'll start out by saying I do realize there is already a post about wisdom teeth. I do open that and I read that it was someone about to get them out. I'm not that nearly far along yet so I decided to start a new thread.

I also realize that everybody grows at different speeds, so these questions will be different for everyone.

-what age do wisdom teeth start comming in?

-after they start growing in, how long will it take until they can be pulled?

I've started feeling pain on my lower right gum area. I also feel the need to teeth on something. It looks like something is just starting to come in there. I don't feel anything in the other three corners, though.

I do brush, floss, and use mouth wash everyday. I don't think it could be gum disease, could it?

Well as you said everyone is different. Mine came in around 16 and still havent fully grown in. And they need to get pulled. There is no specific time to get your teeth pulled. If it hurts super bad and is crowding the other teeth its time to get them pulled. You are probably feeling pain because it hurts when wisdom teeth first start to come in. The pain should go away after a few days and if it doesnst you should contact a dentist and have it checked out.

Your wisdom teeth have been there since you were born, they are sitting under the bone impacted usually, or partially. Very few people nowadays have room for them (our heads are shrinking with evolution). Usually in your late teens, early 20's they start to erupt and cause problems. Swelling, pressure, partial eruption is the most common problem. You can't clean around the area that is still covered with gum tissue so they often get infected. Your dentist will recommend removal if you haven't got the room. An xray easily shows there position in your jaw and is usually taken prior to removal. Wisdom teeth can be removed at any age. The younger you are the easier it is for your body to heal. Some people have them reomoved when they get braces in their early teens. Most people in their 20's or 30's and some people never. They do not need to be erupted, they remove them from the bone as well. This kind of procedure you would likely be referred to an oral surgeon for though versus your regular dentist. They can also remain impacted in the bone and not cause any problems for a lifetime. Most people now have a pretty non eventful removal of them. I had mine out under sedation. I was given an iv with a sedative (valium) and don't remeber a thing, I was 20. Healing was great, no swelling at all. If you think you might need them out, go see your dentist. It really is easier now rather than waiting. Good luck

Thank you, bt.

I was at the dentist today for an annual checkup. He said the pain is indeed from the wisdom teeth. We just started going to him. He doesn't seem seem to be a big fan of having them removed. He said we would wait for about a year. By brother back in our old town had them removed right when they started being visable to the naked eye. He said he had friends who had them removed while they'll still in the bone.

My brothe said he seemed shocked when my brother told him he had his removed. My brother said that he asked him why he did that. I know that's hear-say. My brother told me it hurt bad enough at 17.5 for him to get them removed.

I would like to get them removed soon if it would be easier healing. But then again I don't want to go against hte doctor's orders since he knows much more than what I do. I'll be back in a couple weeks and i'll ask him more questions then.

Thanks again, everyone!!

Mine grew in around 18-20 I got braces right before I turned 20 and we knew they would come out before the braces came off.

Never caused pain until one day last oct my cheek was swollen, that one had to come out that week, had the others pulled the week before xmas

no pain, screamed once heard a crack and I was out cold from the little blue pill.

Drooled, bled a bit, threw away one sweater, slept with a towel over pillow, gauze for a day, no soda or carbon drinks for a week, never took a pain pill just one for nausea :-)

it hurt most to get a bad silver filling out this month and a temp crown but was having other fillings done and they gave me like 10 needles (that hurt the most haha)

I have a partially erupted wisdom tooth on my bottom jaw which although not painful is prone to getting a lot of food debris trapped around the gum area and this can leave a rather unpleasant smell of decaying food matter despite rigorous attempts to clean around the pratially-erupted tooth.

Do teeth that are only partially-erupted always require removal?

partially erupted
i think they should be pulled because the issue you're having can lead to serious infections...i'm got a partially erupted one, actually it decided to start to erupt 2 days ago, and the pain of that big tooth popping out is pushing to thoughts of suicide or ice skate rock surgery, fortunately/unfortunately i've got about 2 grand saved up to spend on a bike that will prolly go to a oral surgeon to start yanking wisdom teeth

Wisdom Teeth
I am getting my wisdom teeth out here very soon. My wisdom teeth are still in my jaw but they are in and i have no room for them what so ever. My mouth is already crowded enough as it is. I am supposed to get braces but my insurance will not pay for them.
Anyway.I will be getting the IV-Sedation, that way i will be knocked out when they take my teeth out. I am not sure what i am supposed to eat after the surgery is finished, how long i am supposed to have an ice pack around my face after the surgery.
