Doctor Can’t Make a Diagnosis He Is Guessing - Help!!!!!!!
Posted: 07-26-05 09:59am

I am a 38 year old male. A year ago I felt fine, the only arthritis issue I had at that point was gout. I would get a flare up in my toe about 1 a year, take medicine for a couple days and it would go away.

Last summer I felt very energetic and decided to do a few things around the house. I built a very large shed, rota tilled the front and large back yard, moved some very large concrete slabs about 200lbs, carried about 50 pieces drywall downstairs and other building materials. After all of this my shoulder became very sore. My doctor put me on some nsaid drugs. The pain became worse after a while then I started to notice my hands were hurting. I went to the doctor again and he said that I had de quervain's tenosynovitis. I was injected with cortisone and it helped for a while then my hand started to become numb. I went to the doctor again and I was told that I now had carpel tunnel syndrome. I again was injected with cortisone in the carpel tunnel but it didn’t work at all. I had surgery on the carpel tunnel and the hand numbness went away. I still couldn’t make a fist. I still have pain in my shoulders and my left wrist also. After a month or two I had surgery again on my left hand to work on my tendons so that I could make a fist again. After the surgery the surgeon wasn’t sure what I had attached to my tendons. The surgeon said that it wasn’t ra since what was on the tendons was a hard crystal like substance. The surgeon had to “chip” away this substance so that I could move my tendons. I can now make a fist 80% of the way in my left hand. The rheumatologist said that what I have resembles psoriatic arthritis but I don’t have any of the symptoms other than the hard substance on the tendons. I just started methotrexate and I really don’t like it. I think that something else is causing my problems, it is hard to believe that I would get this serious arthritis all of a sudden especially right after I did all of this heavy work. Any ideas what I can do??

Are you going to a rheumatologist???? I hope so!!!!!! Please get a diagnosis before you let anyone cut on you anymore. These autoimmune disorders are difficult to diagnose but it's a process we have to go through. I don't feel I have a choice. I have a good rheumy who's working hard to get to the bottom of my disease, but no cutting please.

Good luck. My heart goes out to you and I send you a big hug.

I had a similar problem and a similar "misdiagnoses"/"diagnoses". Are the doctors "guessing"? I don't know either.

But, I came across this information on the net. Btw, the only medicine that did me some good was prednisone, but my doctor wisely only gave me five days of doses.

For those five days, it relieved all my symptoms. However, being a steroid it is very "hard on the body" and all I need are more problems. Prednisone is truly a wonder drug . . . But the stress on the liver, etc . . .

But wait!!!!

Something very promising is on the horizon! Please read the first two articles and digest the import and the possibilities. . . It's on this page:

i hope you see as much in this as I do.

You might have to copy and paste the url into your browser, or even rewrite it. For some reason I get a message that "this server" doesn't connect to that url. Maybe a proprietary option of ehealth forum?

I actually have a cd of a presentation given by a doctor about how nutritional supplements have helped several of his patients, from diabetes to arthritis to cancer. It's about 70min long and if anyone would like one just drop me an email and i'll send one out to you free of charge. No catch.

The case he talks about regarding a co-worker with arthritis was very interesting.
