Q: What's the Matter With the Forum Software?

I am very familiar with phpbb software, having used it many times as a forum member at many sites and as a moderator and administrator of forums using this software. A couple of things seem not to work properly and I was hoping someone could tell me why.

  • the back button (on my mouse or the browser) does not return me to the previous page position, only to the top of the previous page.

  • my text formatting is not preserved - when I capitalize a word it does not display as capitalized. I have better english composition skills than the software.
  • the automatic redirect to the posted message isn't working - I have to click it manually.

  • although the software is open source and free and there appears to be no copyright worries since it is virtually a stock layout, viewing the source (coding) has been disabled (via standard browser settings, not using an old partial source viewer) and saving the page is also thwarted.

i just joined and haven't spent a lot of time here yet, so there may be more problems than this. Can someone explain this to me? Maybe the admin doesn't know there are problems because there isn't a forum to report these kinds of issues?

Thanks for any enlightenment.

Well, I have discovered it is not stock layout. Someone has decided to "customize" it so that I am notified about private messages via my browser status bar. This only works in ie, as far as I can tell, and is not necessary because the standard location of my pm status is still where it normally is, in the upper left corner of the header, below thje logo.

The back button does work when using firefox browser, but I prefer ie. The stock forum software works the same on all browsers, with only minor graphical differences. You have to mess with the coding to break it like this. It's too bad because there are a lot of very good "hacks" made for the software that add many nice functions and design enhancements and there is great support for them online to eliminate any problems.

After a day, i'm wondering if an admin or moderator will even reply to this.

oh yeah, turning html on doesn't help if the software doesn't preserve text formatting. Posting images is chancy at best because of the same reason.
