Myelogram After Effects....ugh.....please Respond!!! Posted: 07-17-05 10:56am
I took my girlfriend to have a myelogram
tues. It's now sunday, and she still
can't get out of bed. It seems she has a
horrible headache whenever she is in the
upright position. She isn't on any meds,
and she's missed a week of work due to
this side effect. A "blood patch" was
offered to her, but she was so frustrated
with her clinic that she doesn't want it.
My questions:
1. Is it common for a severe headache to
last this long after a myelogram?
2. Is there anything like foods or
exercises that will help her?
Please respond....She is miserable, and I
want her to feel better
thanks,
rich :d

The blood patch is the only fix. If she
refused it, she is going to continue to
suffer. She needs to understand that the
headaches and other problems are caused by
a slow leak of spinal fluid and it can
only be helped by a blood patch.

Thank you so much for your reply,
is the blood patch the only way these
headaches will stop
for her? If she decides not to do the
blood patch tomorrow, how much longer will
the spinal fluid leak?

I do not believe there is a set time frame
as to how long she will suffer. I do not
understand why she will not allow them to
close the hole in her spinal column.
It is rather painless when they patch it
and she will be given almost immedeate
relief.
In the mean time she needs to be kept well
hydrated with a good sport style drink.
(gatorade, powerade...) this will allow
for her csf to continue to properly
regenerate as it is lost.
If she refuses to go get this fixed, you
should just go somewhere else while she
suffers alone for a while. I know it
sounds mean but when you get back, she
will probably be ready to go get it fixed.
There is no reason for her to suffer with
such a simple procedure.

I have showed her these posts(which I
appreciate greatly!-thank you!), and we
are headed to the e.R. At moore regional
hospital- I called them, and there is a
doctor there can can do the blood patch
for her!! Thank you for using the word
"painless"...I think that did the trick!

Well, she had her blood patch today. It
wasn't totally painless, according to her.
They made a new hole to get to her spinal
sack, instead of using the same one used
in the myelogram. The good news is that
tonight she walked around the yard twice,
and no longer has the headaches! The
blood patch was indeed the cure! Thanks

Well, its been a few days since the blood
patch, and everything seems ok
except for an occasional "ouch" or
"ugh"...She's going into a fitness
competition tomorrow...I hope its not to
much stress on her lower back,
especially where they performed the
myelogram.....We'll see.
See ya
