Hello,

in early september I injured my back lifting some furniture. Being stubborn like most of us I tried home remedies; aleve, heating pads, ice packs, but nothing was helping. It was getting worse and I was having sharp pains down my right leg and numbness in the bottom of my foot.
I went to the doctor and he ordered an mri to be done. These were the findings: broad-based right paracentral protrusion l5-s1 effacing the ventral aspect of the thecal sac and right s1 nerve root. There is mild canal stenosis.
I have been taking the following medications, panlor ss x3/day, flexiril, and bextra x2/day. I am also in therapy doing stretching exercises, electrical stim with ultrasound followed by 10 minutes of static traction each session.
About 2 weeks ago I was given a steroidal shot in my lower back by an ortho specialist, the shot did nothing for me. None of this has done much more then provide temporary moments of relief, the pain keeps coming back just as bad as when the injury occured.
If I walk more then 15-20 minutes or sit for more then an hour the pain becomes quite unbearable. My tailbone aches allot with sitting. I have also been having trouble with the groin area on my right side. Sleeping in any position except on my side with my knees tucked and a pillow between them is uncomfortable.
What options do I still have open to me for treatments? Thank you in advance for any help you can give me with this =).

Bad Back.....broad Based Right Paracentral Protrusion L5-s1.
Thank you for the input =) and kind words of support. I want to be as informed as possible on this before I give up trying and just settle for surgery. My ortho specialist has recommended me to a back specialist now to discuss my options.

What bothers me a lot also is how slow workers compensation people are in responding to your doctors requests. Over 3 weeks to approve an mri to be done, 2 weeks to refer to an ortho specialist, now who knows how long to approve the back specialist. In the process of trying to get better these have been a substantial road block.

A bit scared, yes. I am 33 now, and as we get older it becomes more difficult to bounce back from our injuries in a timely manner. I am also worried, since now I have no job, and getting a new one seems as though it will be difficult to do. I can not present myself as healthy to work when its a task most days to do much more then go to the store to get food and basic needs, without feeling pain in my back down to my leg and foot.

Some parts of the days are better then others, though its the medication that is giving me that feeling. When it starts to wear off, the pain is right back where it was. Therapy helps some too, though all do more then give me moments of relief.

If surgery is the only answer, I will do it of course. Just making really sure its the only choice.

Thanks again and I also wish you the best, have a great holiday season =).

the protrusion of the cartilage is impinging on the nerve causing swelling and thereby radiating pain along the lower limb. All this can be remedied with intake of homoeopathic medicines.

I have tailbone pain too. I think it is a pressure sore from slouching in hard chairs too much. There is no visible swelling or lumps, but the pain is right on the tailbone. Is this the same type of condition. It is more a nuisance than anything.
