Pain
The reason I ask is because most people, from doctors to home makers, spend a great portion of the day with their heads bent forward. Generally they don't look left or right or look up. If you have shoulder pain with the neck pain, it's because your head is 10 pounds at least, bent forward most of the day, adds up to too much work for the smallest part of your spine to do, so the muscles take over. Kind of like the typing position you take at your pc. Sit that way long enough and it starts to hurt. My advice is to get up, walk around, hang your head to the chest and relax the shoulders. This stretches the muscles in that area. It works for me and I drive tractor trailers.

Along With Chest Pain?
I am having neck/shoulder/back pain for the 1st time really badly tonight...Do you ever have it along with chest pains? Both of my shoulders hurt, more so on the right side tonight along with a stabbing pain in my chest, plus my shoulderblade and back too. Yesterday it was the opposite side along with arm and chest pain and a hard time breathing and I thought I was having a heart attack, tonight it hurts even more though so i'm freaking out again.

Coping With Back And Neck Pain
Dianad you definitely have a point there.
I have suffered from back and neck ache all of my life due to a slight scoliosis of the spine and it is made much much worse when i spend a long time at my computer or sitting still. I’ve had physiotherapy, osteopathy and chiropractic treatment and although they lessened the pain, it always came back after a few days.
In October I had a breast reduction and went from a G-cup, to a C-cup. This has helped enormously. With my new, more streamlined breasts I can now do Yoga and have been practicing at a class once a week since February. The result is incredible.
Recently I’ve started doing some work for a spa in leeds called Waterfall Spa. They sent me on a sampler day and one of the treatments I had was their ‘tension busting massage’. It uses deep tissue massage to really work out the knots in your back and neck caused by tension and stress, and aromatherapy oils, which help to relax your body and mind in general.
I have to say I am definitely going to be back for more!
From my yoga I have learnt that pain relief has a lot to do with breathing and relaxing your muscles. However other than my one hour of yoga a week, realistically there aren’t many times in my hectic schedule for breathing techniques! I found that being in the spa itself (in the aromatherapy room and the hydrotherapy pool) gave me the time to do my deep breathing and just relax fully for a whole day- I felt wonderful!

I agree on the massage - it can do wonders as well as exercise and stretching - just being tense at my job can cause a downward spiral of neck and back pain for weeks for me so I have to concentrate on sitting relaxed but yet very supported (shoulders back, good chair etc).

Alice I agree with you and Shannon, the masage is fantastic, except my massage therapist calls it Trigger Point massage. It works knots out of the muscles, which pretty much cause all of our pains. Take me with to the Spa next time, okay?

Neck Problems
In reference to neck problems, I began sleeping on 2 pillows a year and a half ago to try and see if my sinuses would drain better. Approx. 6 months ago, I began getting aches in the very back left side of my neck, which 9 times out of 10 would result in a headache. I got chronic sinusitis and nose and ear stuffiness. I couldn't figure out what could be causing my problem. At first I thought I was allergic to my cat or a food or something, until I remembered that I had been sleeping on 2 pillows! I immediately went out and bought a memory foam pillow (only 1) I slept on it for only a week, and haven't noticed any more neck problems!! Apparently, by my sleeping on too many pillows, i was putting an enormous amount of stress on my neck muscles all night long, which was giving me headaches, neck aches and also causing me chronic sinusitis! Because the nerves from your neck supply everything above your neck, when they are compromised or restricted for any reason, you can experience problems with your eyes, ears, face, sinuses, etc! BINGO! I have found my problem! Sometimes the answer is right in front of us (or right under us in my case!) Good Luck to all! Please let me know if I have helped anyone else by my post! It's a good feeling when you can help somebody!

try relaxing before going to sleep. Maybe using The Fakirmat which is a (extremely) popular Swedish acupressure mat. It's pillow helped me recover from 1 year almost constant dizziness. Worth a try. Search The Fakirmat on Goohl.

As the above said..a memomry foam pillow is also a good investment.
