If you're 19 and sexually actice then you are past due for a pap. You should be getting on atleast every year. It's nothing to be embarassed or scared about doctors do it everyday. There's no preparation for a pap, just take a bath before you go so you are nice and clean, you dont have to shave or anything. Make sure you schedule your pap for when you are not on your period (doctors cant do it then). First when you get there a nurse will give you a gown to put on, or a sheet to put over your lower half. When you are there the doctor might do a usually check up like listen to your heart, take your blood pressure and stuff like that. He may even give you a breast exam, and just check to make sure there arent any lumps. Then they will start with the actual procedure, a nurse will most likely be there, especially if your doctor is a man. You lie down on bench and spread your legs while the sheet is still covering you. Then the doctor with insert a probe type thing. This is to just create an opening big enough so they can insert the swab. It's lubed and warmed so it isnt too bad, most people find it uncomfortable though. Then the doctor will insert what looks like a long q tip. It goes in all the way and swabs around your cervix. I found this the most uncomfortable part but this only takes about 10 seconds. Afterwards (depending on your doctor) they will do a pelvis exam. The probe comes out and the doctor lubricates their fingers and sticks them in your vagina to feel he inside of your pelvis. This is to make sure that every thing is in the right position like your uterus and stuff. It's weird but its quick and doesn't hurt. After that you're done. The whole thing takes less than 10 minutes. They let you put your clothes back on, and may give you a pad because there could be spotting for some people. You should try to get this done asap and just get it over with. Once you have had it once, you wont be afraid to go back. I know it sounds weird but you can even bring someone you are close to if they let you, it helps for the first time. They can't see anything if they stand by your head. Hope this helps and good luck
