Q: Seeking Answers to Some Questions

Hi all... New to this forum. I am hoping that maybe I might be able to have a few questions answered.

Ok... I had a tubal ligation close to 6 yrs ago. Shortly after, I began having complications. Just about a yr ago I was dx'ed with mennoraghia (heavy menstrual bleeding) and placed on estrin. I had very bad adverse reactions to the estrogen. On top of it I am not a good canidate for birth control because I also suffer from horrible migraines, and the pill just about cripples me when I have a migraine. Seriously, my body goes into shock the bad is so bad.

So here we are, I went in to my gyno. For pregnancy symptoms. Not preggers because I got my cycle and she peformed a pelvic check anyways, but the discussion came up about the menorraghia. My mother had to have a hysterectomy due to menorraghia when she was 36. The gyno said that a hysterectomy would be my only option b/c of the estrogen intolerance, and not being able to take the pill to regualte my period.

She ordered a sono, and took some blood to check my thyroid and iron level. She wanted to know if I was anemic. I tol dher no, I am a blood donor, and blood donors cannot be anemic. I go back on monday 7/11/05 for the results and a well womans exam. She is worried that I become anemic only during my cycle, which I *think* is the reason she mentioned my only option would be surgery. I even asked her if there was information to look up and research in the mean time, only to become more aware of the risks, options ect... She said "not until we know all the answers."

so my questions are: is there a term for anemia during your menstrual cycle? Is anemia during your cycle alone just cause for this surgery? Geez I could come up with more, but I don't want to write a novel.

If you made it this far, thank you for reading. I am hoping that someone can enlighten me as to where to find the info I am looking for.

Feel Your Pain!
I too was dx'd with mennoraghia about two years ago. My gyn tried many different rx to assist with controlling the heavy periods; with the exception of birth control, because I got horrific hormonally induced migraines every cycle, and obviously the pill just instigates additional estrogen which intesifies the migraines. In addition, I too had an ultrasound to rule out any type of fibroids, endometriosis, etc. There was nothing!

After two years of many treatment types, he and my family practice (second opinion) both recommended a hysterectomy. A little scary since I am 34 years old and definitely not prepared for the horrific menopause. The decision to move forward with a hysterectomy brought on an additional question, to leave or not to leave my ovaries? Both physicians concurred that removing both ovaries would possibly alleviate monthly migraines and obviously it is a precautionary link to future cancer.

I underwent a vaginal hysterectomy on may 18, 2005. (had some pretty extreme complications but have fully recovered.) I have no regrets, I have only encountered one migraine and the heavy bleeding will no longer complicate my life.

I will pray that the right treatment be brought forth!
