Hello!!

My daughter was recently diagnosed with something called pharyngitis, she keeps on spiking a very high fever...Should I bring her to the hospital if this continues?? The doctor said just to keep on giving her children's motrin and gaterade....This is very frustrating....

Pharyngitis is inflammation of the pharynx. The pharynx or "throat" is where the digestive tract and the respiratory tract meet. Inflammation accompanied with a fever could mean there is a serious viral or bacterial infection. If it is viral, there isnt much a doctor can do. The patient should rest, increase fluid intake, and try sea salt gargling ect. However if it is bacterial, it could be strept throat which is more serious, and can become severe if it isnt treated. To treat strept throat an antibiotic is needed. The doctor should test your daughter if her symtoms don't reside in a few days. He can do this with a throat swab and culture, and perscribe the right antibiotic. Hope this helps.
