I had a mesh repair of an umbilical hernia on the right side in january, and it seemed that I was doing fine until about a month ago. I was very active again after being cleared for activity several weeks before, and after doing some landscaping, and some moderate lifting all of the sudden I have severe pain, exactly like what I was experiencing right after the surgery. I have had blood and urine tests, as well as a ct and the Dr.'s say that I do not have a recurrence of the hernia, but they aren't really giving me any idea of whether this is normal, if it will ever go away, what else could it be, etc... Etc...

Also, ever since the surgery, I felt some tightness to moderate pain on the opposite side of my abdomen from where I had the surgery. This feels like muscle pull type pain. Is that normal?

Thanks,

jim

Hi, I don't really know about your type of hernia but I am on my third groin hernia just now, I got operated twice and am not willing to go under the knife yet for the third one.
I do know though that it is quite normal to have some pains after your operation, for quite a while afterwards as well. Starting to exercise your muscles slowly can help your body to adjust and gentle stretching might help as well. I think a lot of us don't realise that after an operation you aren't fixed and it isn't ever going to be exactly the same again as it was before we had the hernia and operation.
Don't worry too much just now and just wait, I had problems after both of my hernias and experienced numbness in the groin area still about two years after my operations. My surgeon told me that this can happen because they actually sever the nervs and those only grow a millimeter or so in a year, not too sure about that but they really take a long time.
Just try and not overstrain yourself and do some stretching exercises, it can be useful seeing a physiotherapist to show you a couple of exercises that can help.

I Have the Same Problem
I was had mesh hernia surgery done in nov 05 and its feb 06 and im experiencing pain where the hernia was repaired and on the opposite side as well. I am a running back in college and when I train there is no pain. But when I am just sitting around, it kills me. I thought maybe it was because I was training ot hard and that was why it was in pain, thats not the case, because ive taken a week off and it still kills me!

Anyone have any answers

Post Operative Hernia Pain -
Hi

I have the same issue. ie. pain on the opposite side of the repair - the pain is very similiar to the symptoms of a hernia but no bulge and significantly less pain when coughing. I am consulting the doctor about it in the next few days. Some potential causes that occur to me.

1. Bi-lateral hernia that just took some time to express itself.

2. We are consciously busy compensating ( babying) the repaired side and pull something on the good side. Similiar to spraining your left ankle but continuing to walk/work and putting way too much stress on your RIGHT knee as a result of overcompensation and an awkward gait. Ultimately resulting in a sore RIGHT knee for a few weeks. I say this from personal experience.

For those that have previously posted please respond back and tell me what the results were. If not a bi-lateral hernia how long did the pain in the opposite side last for??

I had a inguinal mesh repair a couple of weeks ago. I also feel just a bit of bilateral pain. I also notice that, sometimes when I'm in the process of reclining, something feels like it's popping out at the hernia site - although it is not painful, and never produces a bump. For a few minutes before it subsides, however, it feels like somebody stuck a matchbook under my skin. Anybody ever feel that sensation - and if so, does it subside with time?
Thanks.

It sound s like you might have some type of nerve issues going from the hernia repair due to the mesh.

If you look through some of the posts, I have responded to others who mention this same or similar problems.

If you have any questions feel free to pm me as I am one of thousands suffering from hernia surgery that went wrong.

hernia repair recovery expectations
Hi,

I had an incisional hernia repair done about 6 wks ago with the mesh insertion etc. I still have some pain in a couple of specific spots around the repair and also have a spot where if I push in there it feels funny....like a space or fluid or something. That spot too can feel painful at times. There is still some numbness as well.

I still have 10 lb lifting resturictions and am sure I have overdone some at times. I am wondering also about how long I should expect these pains and whether or not I should follow up with my Dr on the "funny" spot. I hate to bug Dr.s if it is all just part of the process, but I don't want a recuring hernia either....thoughts?

Hi and Welcome to ehealth

It's still early in your recovery but if you feel something is not right I would recommend seeing your surgeon. Did he/she give you follow up appointments?
You need to be careful with lifting to much to soon. As for feeling fluid I would mention this to your doctor,he might want to order a CT scan or MRI to make sure no fluid is in there or infection setting in.
You also might be feeling staples or tacks in the specific spots.

Anything out of the norm I would return to the doctor..don't feel like you are bothering the doctor. There are many people who are having from problems from the mesh whether it's the mesh or the staples, tacks or sutures.

Keep us posted..Smile

Sex After Hernia Surgery
I'm 55 years old. I had inguinal hernia surgery on Nov. 21st. When I had the staples removed after 10 days, the surgeon told me I could now do anything I wanted, and that there was nothing in the way of activity that I could do to damage the repair. I specifically asked him about several activities, including sex. He said "no problem" to all of them.

The first two weeks of recovery were tough, but I improved slowly but surely. After four weeks, I was feeling pretty good. Almost as good as new. No more pain, except for some minor skin surface sensitivity near the incision. Hadn't had sex for awhile, as you can imagine, so I thought I'd give it a try on Dec. 23rd. I took it slow and easy, but I occasionally had some pain. Some dull, some sharp. I stopped to rest several times, and finally gave up after five minutes. Without getting graphic, I used the basic "missionary" position. Now it's Dec. 31st, and I've been having pain ever since my attempt at sex. Not severe, but enough to notice, and more than I was having before the sex. I'm going to see my surgeon to ask him about it in a few days.

I don't know if I damaged the repair (mesh came loose, etc.), or if it's nerve damage or even muscle strain or sprain (I really did take it easy). Anyone else have this happen? What did your doctor say?

Groin Problem Post Hernia Repair
I have just had my second Hernia repair in 2 years (one each side) while the first one healed very fast (back playing football in 3.5wks) the second is causing me some bother. the actual insision area has healed fine as i only get the usual numbness and odd pain if i put too much pressure on.

however, 3.5 months after my last repair, i am suffering with a VERY stiff and sore to touch groin. I can do physical activity, but only after an extensive warm up. the more i use it, the better it gets. but then i get the pain back when it stiffens up again. its almost like a groin strain.

does anybody have any advice for me?

bi-lateral hernia surgery
had open surgery mesh repair on left and right inguinal hernias. underwent surgery due to severe pain on right side and had left hernia repaired at same time. 2 months post surgery. have begun exercising. walking on treadmill ok. swimming ok. just began light weightlifting. No running yet.
pain on right side has essentially vanished with occasional minor tweak (compared to severe pre-surgery). Left side though is still moderately painful. feels like my abdominal muscle or muscles have been compromised. dull, sometimes sharp pain near testes.
My doctor said it was ok to do just about everything. I'd like to get some normalcy back. Am I pushing the issue here or should I continue the healing process and basically do nothing?

Post hernia symptoms
Hi, its been a little over 3 weeks since my inguinal hernia repair on my right side and I still have good days and bad days. I am walking a little farther everyday, but still get the odd twinge of pain and stiffness. After reading everyones replies, I now realize that it is a slow recovery process. I have lots of energy and want to get back to normal activities, but I guess I will have to wait a few more weeks. I am still having tightness in my scrotum, is this normal? expecialy in the morning when I first get out of bed and through out the day. My scrotum tightens so much it is very uncomfortable. Does anyone else have this symptom and is it a normal reaction and will it go away? Thanks

Sex after hernia surgery, & other comments
I'm recovering from an umbilical hernia. Mine was relatively minor, but after a violent episode of vomiting (bad dressing at a salad bar), it twisted & became strangulated. I passed out a few times (no blood flow to face or arms), my wife took me to the emergency room, and they did an emergency procedure.

The surgeon said this was life threatening, and pretty much the worst case scenario for a hernia. So if your hernia pops out and won't go back in, it is definitely cause for concern.

My recovery is going very well (15 days). Regarding sex ("hernia_kid") I strongly advise staying on your back, and letting your partner do most of the work.

Even when on your back and laying relatively still, an orgasm affects all those abdominal muscles to tense up, so be careful. Missionary position is about the worst position to try during recovery - it puts more strain on your abdomen than doing push-ups or sit-ups. Try something in a slightly upright position (maybe leaning back against some pillows), or any number of positions flat on your back ... at least for a while.

Hope this helps!

I just had a left scrotal/inguinal hernia repaired with mesh a couple weeks ago, and whenever i go to get up i experience a kind of burning pulling pain in my stomach right above where the incision is. Also my left Testicle is swollen to about 3-4 times the size of the right one has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Tmac4686 go to your doctor now.
I had a hernia op on my stomach 18 months ago, all OK.
Yes it hurts and pulls for a while and you are always paranoid when lifting.
I am a window fitter(40) and do lots of heavy lifting, twisting and pulling even now I still place my hand on my hernia when I cough, comforts me but is not needed.
12 years ago I had testicular cancer stage 1 and had a testicle removed.
My symptoms were an increased size of my left testicle, very dull throbing pain in left testicle when bending or straining but no pain if touched or squeezed.
I had no problems with the removal or afterwards other than steady lifting for a while after the op.
Unfortunatley 1 year later in my routine checks(ct scan) I was diagnosed stage 2 of the cancer(kidney nodes) and had a Very large op to remove the cancer.
This op was harder to recover from as I was cut down my stomach from my brestbone to my groin, but no real problems 2 weeks in hospital 6 weeks recovery at home then slowly back to work with minimal lifting for a month.
No problems since then thanks to great after care by Warwick hospital.
My advise to anyone with a swollen testicle is to go to the doctor straight away.
The longer you leave it the more chance of getting stage 2 ,which is a lot more serious.

Good luck I wish you well,

Gavin

inguinal hernia recovery
Hi guys, I'm only 48 hrs after my open inguinal op to my right side so still quite tender but noticed my right testical has swollen to 3 times the size, it's not sore but the wound downwards is and occasionally a burning sensation down that side. Was told at the hospital that the swelling was common but naturally you think the worst. Managing to walk around ok for short periods of time, just need to keep taking the tablets! I assume the advice given was correct but obviously open to any other advice. Many thanks.

Hope ur all feeling better soon, Mike

I am 5 days past my inguinal operation and am concerned that I still feel the same lump as prior to surgery. The area is quite sore still and has bright red bruising (but no pain) several inches from the incision site. As this is my first hernia, could any of this be normal. Climbing stairs as well as getting in and out of bed creates a pulling and burning sensation.
Thanks for your insight.
