8 Weeks And Only See a Yolk

I had my first ultrasound today. I think
I am only about 8 weeks pregnant but
according to my last monthly period my dr
says I am around 10. Anyway, all they
seen was a yolk and they couldn't see any
embryo formed inside to measure. They
said I could be earlier on that we'd both
thought or that it may be a miscarriage.
I have no sign of miscarriage, no pain or
bleeding/spotting. I also feel fine too
and have had no morning sickness or tender
breasts since finding out I was
pregnant.
Does anyone have any experience of
something like this? I have to wait till
next week now to go back and have a second
ultrasound before I know what's going on.

I'm sorry but it sounds like a pregnancy
that didn't take. I know I had an u/s @
5 weeks and you could see something and I
had another one at 9 weeks and could
already see the baby forming.
Sometimes with miscarriages , there are no
symptoms or it could gave just been a preg
that didn't take.
Good luck and please keep us posted.

2 Week Discrepency

Ah the 2 week discrepency that we're all
confused about!! When your Dr. Says
you're 10 weeks pregnant, that means 10
weeks ago was the first day of your last
period. They don't count from the day of
conception because that's always harder to
figure out. I've also asked why they
calculate like this, and they say it's
easier to determine due date. So in
theory when you're baby is born, he/she is
really 2 weeks younger than what you're
told.
A normal pregnancy lasts 40 weeks (38
weeks if you count from the day of
conception)

Measure Embryo

If the ultrasound machine doesn't go deep
enough, they won't be able to measure such
a small embryo but typically they should
be able to at this point. I think the
embryo is visible by most ultrasound
machines around the 6th - 7th week.
There's a chance the gestational sac is
empty (meaning the embro never formed).
Also, don't get confused with gestational
sac and yolk sac. The gestational sac is
what houses the formations, then a yolk
sac appears, then an embryo. Within days
of the yolk sac appearing, the embryo
should also appear.

Thanks for all the replies. I did have
an internal ultrasound so if there was
anything there I would have thought they'd
have been able to see it. I think it's
sounding more like it stopped forming.
Whatever way, I won't know for sure till
thursday so i'll just have to keep my
fingers crossed. Other than that, I feel
fine so far so don't know when signs of a
miscarriage would show if that is what's
happening.
Thanks for all the replies and keep them
coming. I'm interested to hear from
anyone else who has had the same
experiences.

If you had an irregular cycle you might be
alot less then 10 weeks along. Ie: if
your last period was june 1 then you'd be
almost 5 weeks along and if you had a
normal cylce you'd have concieved between
the 12-20th of june. So if you had
cycles that are like 40 days it would be
really hard to tell when you concieved.
I wouldn't worry to much yet. They are
probably going to draw your blood to check
if you hcg is doubling every 2 days. If
it is you should get a heartbeat when your
hcg is about 6000. Keep us posted, and
good luck

My cycle is about every 40 days or at
least that's the average I took over the
last 3 months. Hopefully this does mean
that I am much earlier on than we think
although my lmp was 19 april so I
calculate that I should be around 9 weeks
by now.

According to the calendar you would be
about 9 weeks now, but if you ovulated
later, you could have ovulated as late as
15 days before you got a positive on the
hpt. That would make you earlier on in
the pregnancy, and may be the reason you
can't see a fetus yet. Have they drawn
your blood and told you what you levels of
hcg are?

I did have blood drawn before I went for
the ultrasound. I don't know what the
levels were though.

You should ask your Dr. Immediately, and
find out how they are climbing. They
should double every 2 days. Ask them to
check you levels for at least a week
before anything is done.

I hope everything works out for you when
you see the dr again. I don't want to
sound negative, but with my first
pregnancy, this is what happened. They
(it was twins) stopped developing at about
5 weeks but I didnt actually begin to
miscarry until 11 weeks, which is when I
found out I was miscarrying. It is
called a missed miscarriage and they say
it is quite uncommon, although I know many
people who have experienced it.
Hopefully this is not what is happening to
you. On the brighter side, I got
pregnant again 2 months later and am now
almost 9 weeks and everything seems to be
going well. Good luck and keep us
posted. :)

I am 9 week 5 days pregnant. I had an
intervaginal u/s last week @ 8 weeks 3
days, we saw the heart beat and the form
of the baby. When I went for an u/s at 6
weeks 3 days all we saw was the yolk.
I assume if you had the same u/s at 8
weeks you should see the heart beat too.
My last preggancy (6 months go) was a
partial molar pregnancy, it was half baby
, half tumor. It showed it not growing
past 6 weeks when I should have been 10
weeks.
If the u/s and not your doctor showed you
should be 8 weeks, then it doesn't sound
good to just see yolk. I wish you all the
luck in the world. Please get back to
us!!

Had My Follow Up Ultrasound
Posted: 07-07-05 09:37am

I had my follow up ultra sound today.
Things are looking a bit better. They
were able to measure the baby inside the
yolk and say that I am actually 6 weeks
and 2 days pregnant and not 8-10 weeks as
first though. This looks good since
there was nothing to measure last week.
They couldn't detect a heartbeat today so
I have to go back on monday to see if they
can see that then. They say it may be
that it's just too early right now.

congratulations....Glad they were able to
see your 'lil baby this time and not just
an empty sac....I felt really bad when I
read your first post then after reading
your last one I thought good things are
starting to look up for her. So that's
great. I will be 3 months 1 week from
this sunday.

Bad News

Well bad news, I was back for a 3rd
ultrasound today since they couldn't
detect the heartbeat last time. There
was still no hearbeat and the dr's say
that I am about to miscarry since the yolk
sac is now beginning to fold in and is no
longer round. I feel sad about it all.
I've only known I was pregnant for just
over 2 weeks now but already I have built
my mind up to everything and it's so
disappointing for both me and my husband
now that this has happened. What makes
things worse is that I still feel fine.
They told me about the 3 options, waiting
for natural miscarriage, the d&c or
taking some pills(?) to progress the
miscarriage. I said i'd probably rather
just wait for natural miscarriage so they
are going to have me come in once a week
for the next 3 weeks to check how things
are progressing. If nothing happens by
then they recommend d&c.
I spoke with my mum on the phone today
about this. She had a miscarriage before
and opted for the d&c at the time.
Friends had told her that having a natural
miscarriage can mean severe stomach cramps
and really heavy bleeding. Now i'm not
sure whether I should have just opted for
this and then it would all be over and
done with much quicker and painlessly.
Does anyone have any experience or advice
on either option?

Hmm.
Well, i'm sorry if anyones response
freaked you out. I was 8 weeks when I
found out I was pregnant, and they didn't
do an ultrasound at that point because
they wouldn't get much from it. Since
you're only 6 weeks, that's probably why.

Was your first ultrasound and internal
vaginal though or just the normal
ultrasound done on your stomach?
