Q: Vaginal Hysterectomy Post Op Complications
asked by: JSAC on June 30th, 2005

I am 34 years old, I underwent a vaginal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo oopherectomy on may 18, 2005. Unfortunately, my insurance company only allowed this px as outpatient with observation. I was d/c on may 19. On may 20, I became extremely ill including 103 fever, vomitting, excruciating lower abdominal pain, and vaginal bleeding. I contacted my physician via telephone who recommended, antibiotics and percocet, for pain. By monday, may 23, I was readmitted inpatient with a post-op illius, however, the complications continued to worsen. Lab work was performed, which indicated septicism, a ua indicated a bladder infection, and a ct scan reflected a 16 cm infectious hematoma in my lower abdomen. On may 25, my physician recommended surgically draining the hematoma (via vaginal). The px was completed successfully. I had extreme bleeding for the next three inpatient days. I was then d/c on friday, may 27 on antibiotics to control the infection. I continued to have bright red vaginal bleeding for approximately two weeks after discharge. I then met with my family practice physician to discuss the prolonged bleeding. Upon examination, he suggested an additional ct scan. The second ct scan indicated yet another hematoma. My gyn suggested antibiotic treatment, to control infection in hopes that the hematoma drains and/or is absorbed into my body (rather than additional surgical treatment). I have experienced seven weeks of continued vaginal bleeding which subsided two days ago, however, the pain and pressure has not. I am extremely concerned that the hematoma has not drained and could possibly be growing larger.

Any suggestions and encouragement would be greatly appreciated!
