Q: Hives???

Hi everyone,

has anyone ever broken out in hives for no reason? I am covered with them and I can't seem to get them to go away. I have tried benedryl and benedryl cream. I think it may be my lupus reacting to the fact that I just had surgery. Confused

Cheers,

Lots of things can cause hives and itchy rashes...

Have you been nipped by a dog or animal recently (within the last few months)? If you have had any small injury to the skin which introduced bacteria, there is a condition called foliculitis, which causes extremely itchy skin hives all over your body. It does not respond to cortizone, benedryl or other usual hives-medications. But it clears up quickly with antibiotics.

Good luck!

I get hive-like things all the time. All of them are due to my lupus.

The only thing that helps me is steroids. Let me know if you want anymore information on my rashes.

Hey Ladyb
I had to make a trip to the hospital where they gave me 150mg of steroids and 50 mg benedryl i.V.

The hives are still there but not as bad, the new rash on my face is clearing a bit as well.

Cheers,

Jenn:

mary makes a good point. A nice anti-histamine with the steroids can't hurt!

Yeah, I hear you. If things don't turn around by friday, I get a 500 mg infusion of steroids. *joy*

i hope you are feeling much better!

I Dont Know
I am having the same problem, I was in a coma for 10 days, I had septic shock and pneumonia. I also have lupus. I have this rash that popped up 2 weeks after I was released from the hospital the first time.... They started on saturday so I saw my doc on monday and my doc told me that it looked as if it were a drug reaction. Should get better right? Wrong it continues to grow. I went to the emergency room on tuesday because I was also blacking out and shaking. They admitted me and totally ignored the fact that I had this rash. The rash has continued to get worse and now I have 3 different diagnoses from the biopsy that was taken last tuesday. It could be a drug reaction.... I hope or it is my lupus now coming to my skin instead of staying inside my body or it could be syphilis, I have never had syphillis before, I got sick.... I am frustrated and trying to search for answers. If I find any I will be sure to repost for you. If anyone else has any ideas we could use them.

To luvbears! Welcome!

Some lupus patients will have false "positive" syphillis test results. Is this what you are referring to?

Response to False Positives
Lady brannon,

i had no idea that was even a possibility. I am so upset and sad because they just cant figure it out. The rash is now spreading and continuing to increase in numbers, the current outbreak is spreading to my face and combining with the other spots to make it look like on big continuous rash... I just dont know what to do.

Thank you for the insight....

to Luvbears...
Have you thought of going to an urgent care or er? They can help put you in contact with a good rheumatologist and get the necessary tests run to see if you are in flare.

Sending you warm thoughts! Hugs,
